Lockheed Martin expects to upgrade 500 in-service F-16s to a new, AESA radar equipped, 'F-16V' format within seven years, after bagging orders for over 300 upgrades to date from South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore.

The upgrade sees the addition of Northrop Grumman's SABR electronically scanned radar, as well as a new 6 by 8 inch center pedestal display, a Link 16 data link, enhanced data processing and a Sniper advanced targeting pod. The new radar offers functions including multiple target tracking, synthetic aperture, ground moving target indication, and greater reliability than a mechanical radar.

"Three customers are refitting 300 aircraft now and we expect several hundred more in the next few years," said Randall Howard, head of F-16 Business Development.

A source said the target was 500 aircraft in seven years, with possible future customers including Greece, Turkey and Egypt. Current customers Korea, Taiwan and Singapore have refitted around 130, 130 and 50 jets respectively.

The push to sell the upgrade kits comes as Lockheed Martin reaches 4,588 F-16 orders since the aircraft's launch. But with 4,573 of those aircraft now delivered, the firm has just 15 F-16s left to assemble, meaning its production line will come to a halt at the end of 2017.

Separately, the USAF is upgrading its Block 40/50 F-16s to extend their flying life from 8,000 hours to around 12,000 hours, said Howard.

While Lockheed Martin has chosen the Northrop Grumman radar over its Raytheon competition as the designated radar for the F-16V upgrade, the US has not selected an AESA radar to perform similar upgrades for its aircraft.

Greece has just asked for the upgrade.. Greece will get the upgrade at the lowest cost because it will be part of US military aid to Greece, Turkey will do its own upgrade.. we might soon get the news that Egypt will ask for the Viper upgrade too, just like Greece..

What is known so far is that the deal is about to be signed.. but there are several points of disagreement, Egypt wants to upgrade a large number on Egyptian territory and the US is trying to reduce the number because it is in their interest, of course..

We'll find out if things have really changed if the AIM-120 is included in this upgrade.

a Link 16 data link,

They're already operating on Link 16.

The SABR radar would be excellentt and they don't need them on all the pre-block 52 jets.
I'm not sure why they mention the Sniper targeting pod since the EAF already operates that and the FLIR pod and all the older Falcons have been upgrade to Blk 40 IIRC.

IMO, the 4 most important things they need is the radar upgrade, finally get the AIM-120 C5 missiles and associated software changes (since the EAF now has some of the better BVR missile between the Rafale's MICAs and the MiG-35 R-27s & R-77s so it's silly to keep restricting the AIM-120), airframe & structural inspection and required maintenance and finally, install IFF sensors and interrogators on all the jets so that they work with the block 52's that already have them.

Oh yeah, and get rid of the day-glo patches and paint all the pre-blk 52 birds with a new, fresh, simple paint job just like this. Those patches are completely useless now. They should insist on getting rid of them.
