LNG: European thirst for natural gas puts Bangladesh in dark

India's favorite Hasina Bibi for the last two decades had not shown interest to extract local gas mostly because the foreign companies who would invest/ gamble hundreds of millions of dollars to discover and then extract oil and gas could not be persuaded to oil the palms (read Bakshish) of BAL's top people (read Hasina Bibi and Rehana Bibi).
be happy that Bangladesh does not have natural gas. the elite will be happy with the proceeds while the rest of you wallow in poverty

BD Gas quantity is insufficient. So, it was importing LNG from Qatar. But, now the LNG price is high and the supply has stopped.

It means BD gov relies on LNG spot market. This is something that can be considered as not responsible when your gas power plant is supplied by LNG gas coming from spot market. It should be coming from long term LNG contract that is usually tied to oil price fluctuation.

.
I read somewhere EU and other wealthy countries have locked up all LNG cargos until 2026. Nothing left for smaller economies....they can only get the out the thick blankets and candles.

The true problem is the incompetent of that developing countries when they rely on LNG spot market for their power plant supply instead of long term contract.

That's inaccurate. India backed out of Iran pipeline. USA, old Kabul regime and India resisted completion of TAPI. India did not want pipelines that went through Afghanistan and Pakistan because of its own insecurities.

In the near term Pakistan will focus on its vast untapped brown coal reserves and hydro power. Gas Pipeline with Iran will be finished soon. Turkmenistan is pushing hard for completion of TAPI. If India does not want to participate....does not matter. LNG plants in Pakistan can get Turkmen or Russian gas to Bangladesh and other Asian countries.
Yes, you are right, but it is also true that Pakistan did not guarantee security for the pipeline. However, Afghanistan still remains an issue as always.

However, there could be another route via Chinese West completely bypassing Afghanistan to Pakistan/ Gilgit.

This project should be revived with China also being another stakeholder. Uzbekistan has a vast quantity of natural gas waiting to be tapped.

@bluesky

Neel Akash Dada,

India is in a little better position. India has its own oil and its private company Reliance has discovered a huge quantity of natural gas

It is true that India is in a slightly better position than Pak or BD as far as power is considered. But it has nothing to do with its oil and gas which it has little of. India is predominantly a coal fired economy and it has bucketloads of it. Sadly, India hasnt done a great job of mining coal either. India imports almost 200 mio MT of coal annually (about 20% of its consumption) whereas it should be an exporter really.

The best solution for BD is to be better integrated into the Indian grid and for India to boost its own coal mining.

Regards

Our great @UKBengali will love to read the sentence above. But, BD also has a huge quantity of coal in its NW. But, like everything else, our BAL politicians do not like to make use of this domestic coal for obvious reasons.

They are not interested to blacken the citizens' dark skin by extracting coals in the northern districts. They, rather, love to import coal from Indonesia in order to whiten their black hands with illicit money,

And our great PDF BAL brats shout Joy Development and Joy Bangla in unison!! The same is going with natural gas extraction. Bhola island has more than 3 trillion cft. of gas, but extracting it does not pay the politicians, but importing pays.

So, BD was importing LNG from Qatar which has backfired now.
