Chinese smartphone makers are winning everywhere.

After having beaten Samsung in India, they are now sweeping through Bangladesh. Local brand Symphony’s sales declined 48% year-on-year and 37% quarter-over-quarter, latest International Data Corporation (IDC) data show. Though it still maintained its lead with a 29% share, its stronghold is weakening.

During the same period, Shenzhen-based Transsion bagged the second spot with its sales rising by 14% between the third and fourth quarters of 2017. Samsung fell to the third position.

In a country with 147 million mobile phone subscribers, over 10 millionuse smartphones. Although feature phones still dominate—they account for two-thirds of all phone sales in Bangladesh—smartphones recorded a massive 20.6% annual growth at the end of 2017. IDC estimates that 8.1 million smartphones were sold in the country in 2017 alone. A total of 34.2 millions phones were sold over the last year.

The collective market share of Chinese companies climbed up significantly to 33% in the last quarter of 2017 from 19% in the previous year. During the same period, local companies’ share fell by over 20 percentage points.

“A high specification product line-up, aggressive pricing, and heavy marketing spend helped China-based companies to get a quick share in the Bangladesh market,” the report said. The same strategies also put the players on top in markets like India and Africa.

And their win is Samsung’s loss.

Like in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, the Korean tech giant is losing ground across the border, too. Eight-year-old Chinese brand Xiaomi now leads in India’s smartphone segment with a 27% share, versus Samsung’s 25%.

In any case, the space is only going to heat up further. “China-based companies will continue to spend on marketing and channel expansion,” Jaipal Singh, senior market analyst at IDC India, said about Bangladesh’s market. “Some more are expected to make their entry in the country which will intensify the competitive landscape.”

I'm glad India doesn't put a stop to the Chinese using the lame 'National Security' reason.

Because local companies have no R&D in this sector (that i know of) ; they simply rebadged chinese OEM's phones (AFAIK they still do this to this date); thats why they have poor software support and don't offer much bang for the buck ( they use dreadful, battery hungry MTK soc's, cameras are subpar); but they are still very popular for the entry level consumers (under $100 or BDT 10K)

thats why chinese companies such as xiaomi, huawei and oppo are gaining popularity nowadays, they offer relativly good bang for the buck (capable SOC's, decent cameras, good software support etc) and thus are dominating the midrange (10K-25K) ($100-$250 range)

samsung lost its popularitty on the midrange because they are just too expensive (and the 'lag' stigma associated with samsung also discourages some users)

Local brands are gaining market share in BD unlike India where local brands are loosing market share.

brother, local brands are also losing market share as per the article

They are taking the market share of Samsung and Nokia.

No they are not. Walton just started their production facility for smartphone. Symphony will do that too.

but i dont think they designed though; the real money is in the 8K-20K price range, just look at xiaomi, they gained a massive chunk of the indian market solely due to the redmi note 4 which is priced around 14K in BD;

They are taking the market share of Samsung and Nokia.

Nokia only recently started making android smartphones, their windows phones weren't very popular so how are they suppose to loose market share when they didn't have any to begin with?

both samsung and Symphony are loosing market share. just look at their sales decline at the beginning of the article.

Samsung is also apparently starting their own phone productions in BD, Tecno mobiles too. Which will make life harder for local companies.

For Bangladeshi phones to succeed in bd, they need to adopt steps taken by oppo and oneplus.

ditto,

most BD consumers about good camera and a lagless experience while browsing FB; if they can fullfill these requirements and couple it with a bit of advertising, they can regain their fair share of the pie, especially if its made in BD.

Fall of Samsung is it's destiny. Blood sucking vampires shouldn't survive in this world . With some so called sophisticated technology Samsung just want to cut throat. Only some folks who want to show off Wil buy High end Samsung phone. Now for the rest brands, Sony , HTC , and others produce good quality Phones with high price.
And xiaomi, huawei are exactly providing not only the same quality Phones, but also even better quality Phones with half price of Sony and HTC and almost 1/3 of price comparing Samsung.
So only fool, ignorant, Idiot middle class and rich folks will buy Samsung.
And also HTC mid range mobiles Internet network and WiFi is poor, but with half price you can get way better quality phone from huawei and xiaomi.
It's likely comparing the two plane eurofighter typhoon is providing slightly better performance than sukhoi 35 with double price.
So Samsung is doing the same comparing the Chinese brands.
So surely Samsung should never be an option for them who value their/their father's hard earning money.

public opion on samsung phones are that they're reliable, they get the job done, thier cameras are good quality . lets hope that if samsung starts production in BD, there would be a significant reduction the their prices althogh after all a importers have to pay nearly half of the phones price as customs duty!
