DHARWAD: If everything goes according per plan, Belur industrial area of Dharwad will get to produce Light Infantry Combat vehicles for military purposes.

Tata Motors from Dharwad has applied for creation and production of the defence vehicle unit at its plant in Dharwad under the ‘Make in India’ drive, wherein in addition to light combat vehicles, military jackets, rifles and other items would be produced.

MLA Aravind Bellad told Express that the project necessitates creation of huge infrastructure if selected and the investment will run to Rs 60,000 crore over a few years.

“Since the Central government has decided to produce vehicles related to defence in India, such ‘Indianised’ production units will be the future of the country. As the company had applied for it, it needs to show a proposed location. We along with authorities of Tata Motors Ltd have stressed on setting up the unit in Dharwad only,” he said.

He accompanied authorities of Tata Motors Ltd, and held talks with Defence Ministry officials and the Defence Minister Manohar Parikkar. The discussion had given a positive result. With establishment of the production unit, employment for thousands of people could be generated. If the plant is successful, it will be given orders to produce military tanks in later years. The tender for opening up of such military vehicle production unit will be opened on January 16,” he said.

In addition to ICVs, will produces rifles, jackets, etc. And in the future, tanks. Who would be threatened by this in India? :D

At this rate, the center of gravity will shift from DPSUs/Ordinance factories to the Private players in the next 5 years.

I think it'll be longer then 5 years, but for me, there's no doubt they'll dominate OFB within 20.

It's pretty impressive what has happened in these last couple of years. With TATA going to produce a massive plant to assemble C295s, L&T making a plant for K9 Thunders, and Reliance with Talwar frigates for their shipyard. Reliance is also making a huge aerospace park, which I am sure will get some orders as well. Along with L&T shipyard as well.

This is only the beginning.

Absolutely. This is the best thing that has happened to India since this government came in.

By allowing sellers to choose their partners for JVs and offsets, the government has greatly boosted the cause of getting the private players into the Indian defense industry.

HAL,BEL,BEML,DRDO all are gonna be fine (taking Govt orgs as a whole),its OFB which is getting kicked in the rear, quite deserved ones I would say

DPSUs are also on the radar.

HAL is already feeling the heat on LCA and Kamovs. I would not be surprised if FGFA JV goes to a private player as TATA is already getting into SU-30MKI spares business.

They will survive, but their control of the market will continue to get cut. Their share of the pie will continue to get smaller. Defence R&D will take longer for them to grasp, so DRDO will be around for some time. But I wouldnt mind if they go the way of DARPA, and concentrate on strategic programs, future concepts. All this competition obviously only helps the end user.

They will survive, and will become the integrator, with pvt players producing the parts.

It is still important that strategic R&D efforts remain with the public entities (DRDO). I've been statig for years that India should follow the DARPA model as @Water Car Engineer stated. DRDO should conduct the R&D and then outsource production to trusted private entities.

DRDO is actually an incredibly successful orginisation and simply unmatched in the region in many key areas, let's not be so eager to throw the baby out with the bathwater. The DRDO is made up of 100+ labs/institutes, many of them doing fine work, a few well publicsed failures in a few projects not withstanding. And as the head of the ADA said in a video @Water Car Engineer posted in another thread- they like to publicise their failures as this is the only way one can improve.

The DPSUs like HAL, BEL and BEML will benefit from some competition from the private sector and I'm sure they will rise to the occasion, again they have produced many successes.

OFB is a lost cause though.....:lol:

I read a post in a thread whose title I forget that sometime back BAe proposed an audit & up gradation program for OFB's to the MoD , a few years back.Wonder what came out of it ?

Even if things materialised , The work ethic there is an altogether different story .

I do believe that if organizations like Air India with their notoriously poor work ethic could turn the corner & come back from the red , with a pretty painful period in between , so can the OFB , after a trial thru fire .

I said it at the time- the GoI needs to grab that offer with both hands. The BAE offer would see a complete transformation of the OFB from a backwards joke to one of the most cutting edge entities not just in India but in the world.

You are right that it is possible to change the fortune of such entities but as the AIr India example shows, hard economic decsions have to be taken and it is all about the leadership at the top and the will to compel change.
