Life after freedom: How India compares with 5 other countries

Around the time India awoke to ‘life and freedom’, a few other countries too were throwing out colonists, monarchies and other old regimes to form modern states. In the race to progress since then, who has fared the best? We compare India’s performance on six parameters with five countries that gained Independence in the late 1940s— China (1949, Communist revolution), Pakistan (1947), Bangladesh (1947 from Britain, 1971 from Pakistan), Sri Lanka (1948) and Indonesia (1949).

Here is some hard data from year 2016 [Reference 1]. Let us compare the 3 Hindi-belt states that give less and get more from Indian government with 3 Southern states that give more and get less. For every Rs. 100 that Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madya Pradesh pays in taxes to India, they get back from India (in the form of central projects, joint state-centre projects, grants, etc.) Rs. 179, Rs. 96 and Rs. 75. In contrast, for every Rs. 100 that Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka pays in taxes to India, they get back from India Rs. 25, Rs. 40 and Rs. 47, respectively

Indian fertility rate is 2.4. Not 3.5. Gross inaccuracies. Need to check on the other stats.

While these numbers may not be the best.

They are a good sight, given reflections and 20/20 hindsight.

While poverty stricken nations may engaged in bravado with militaries and weapons ranges, it would be pleasant to see, perhaps for 1 year, full strength engagement towards HDI indicators.

India performance is bad. There is nothing to be proud of
But then things could be worse

I don't think China was completely colonized. So not sure if we can have China on this list.
