Libyan National Army (LNA) announced on December 13 that its units had shot down a Turkish unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAV) near the country’s capital, Tripoli.

The UCAV was reportedly shot down over the area of Ain Zara, southeast of Tripoli, while it was supporting forces loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA).

Pro-LNA sources released photos showing the wreckage of the downed UCAV, which was identified as a Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2.


The Bayraktar TB2, which was first introduced in 2014, has an endurance of 24 hours and an operational range of 150 km. Earlier this year, Turkey and possibly Qatar deployed several UCAVs of this type in Tripoli to support GNA forces.

The downed UCAV appeared to be armed with at least two MAM-L small-diameter laser-guided munitions, made by Turkey’s Roketsan.


In the last few months, the LNA claimed on several occasions that it had shot down Turkish UCAVs over western Libya. However, this is the first time a proof was presented.

A day earlier, the LNA’s Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar announced the launch of a “decisive battle” to capture Tripoli from the GNA.

According to Alan Warnes, Jordan also retired their CH-4B drones just after two years of operations and Haftar is in the process of buying them.

Is Bayraktar TB2 a UCAV? This was one of the most funny thing I read these days. This is nothing more than a tactical UAV system without SATCOM capability, its a Tactical Armed / UAV System with 80 hp mini engine. But apparently it caused so much trauma that this crush celebrate by someones as a feast.

Turkey has not even officially logged in Libya. Agreement between Turkey and Libya legitimate government presented to the UN. Be a little patient.

I still cannot tell which government is good for the Libyan people, they both have mixed allies and both sides have extremist support. The Muslim brotherhood is with the GNA and Egypt, Saudi, UAE will never recognize that side.

The only solution is a unified government with all militants disarmed. Haftar needs to resign and libya needs to bring in neutral generals.

My dear friend, 96% of Libya's land is made up of desert areas and there is no population. The majority of the population and service areas throughout urban area are still under the control of the legitimate Libyan government. Libya is a land of tribes and deserts. If you don't know enough about it, you can't understand anything by looking at the map.

You have to ask yourself that question: Imagine a Colonel responsible for land loss to India. This Colonel returns to the country and attempts a failed coup and divides the country in two. And imagine that this general backed by some gulf countries and others. Would you say the same things?
