LHC Asked to Make Airbags Mandatory in All Cars

A citizen has filed a written petition to the Lahore High Court (LHC) to make airbags mandatory in all local vehicles.
The petition was targeted at major vehicle manufacturers and government departments. It stated that there are many recent examples recently of people dying in car accidents due to the absence of airbags in them, and hence, airbags should be made mandatory.

According to the current Automotive Development Policy (ADP) 2016-2021, airbags are not mandatory in local vehicles, which is why the citizen filed the petition to amend the policy with the inclusion of the clause for mandatory airbags in vehicles.
The petitioner added that all new cars should have proper safety equipment and that no car should be allowed to enter the market without it.

Although the government’s ADP had been developed to provide guidelines to the automotive industry in Pakistan, it does not mention mandating airbags in vehicles.

The petitioner requested the court to accept the petition and direct the concerned authorities to ensure that the required safety equipment is installed in all local vehicles. He also requested the court to ensure that the necessary amendments are made to the ADP.

Are the customers in the domestic market able and willing to pay for the cost of all the added safety equipment?

All new cars as per my limited knowledge are coming with airbags minus Wagon R VXR which does not.

If customer can buy teen dabba of a million rupees. He will buy it with airbags too.

Airbags add several hundred dollars to the cost on top of what is already the price.

Yes they can.

Okay, no problem then.

we already paid it

did this car worth 10285.30 USD$?

or this onE 11925USD$?

or this one 12809 USD $????????/

Those prices are more due to taxes rather than the cars themselves. Adding more equipment will only increase the price on the road unless tax breaks are given.

aren't the manufacturers suppose to adhere to minimum safety standards?

Cars are expensive in Pakistan. The only people who buy cars in Pakistan are those who can afford an extra bit of money here and there. I've had terrible experiences with hire cars in Pakistan, poor brakes, no ABS, no traction control, no airbags and the most horrible thin tin used on the bodywork. Mind you i've also noticed people have had seat belts removed because they consider them a nuisance.

the government harps about e-mobility every week and yet cannot legislate simple public safety measures.

shameful indeed

Yaar sab kuch isi gomit se karwa lo.....pehlay vote ko izzat to de lainay do......phir kuch aur karnay ka mouqa bhi milay ga.

Tax are high on vehicles above 1300cc not these vehicles. These companies are a mafia who collude to keep prices high despite sourcing many car part locally. Prices in Pakistan are highest in entire south asia despite local manufacturing and assembly and relatively low taxes.

Addition of an extra 1000-2000$ won't really make a difference to people who are already buying these cars at such ridiculous prices.

Yes, the Pakistani motorist is a peculiar being in many ways. :D

When taxes are high on bigger cars, it creates more head room for the smaller cars to be priced higher too. Adding another $1000 worth of safety equipment may be less preferable to more chrome and shakshas that others can see, given the prevailing mindset. :D
