Chinese PC maker Lenovo took the crown in the global PC market in 2018, followed by US-based companies HP and Dell, according to data from consultancy Gartner released on Thursday.

Lenovo held an 22.5 percent share of the global PC market, with shipments of 58.467 million units in 2018. The figures were higher than 2017's 20.8 percent and 54.669 units.

In the fourth quarter of 2018, Lenovo's PC shipments went up 5.9 percent, reaching 16.628 million units and market share raised to 24.2 percent from 21.9 percent in the same period of 2017.

Lenovo has recorded three consecutive quarters of double-digit year-over-year shipment growth, Gartner said.

Respective shares of HP and Dell were 21.7 percent and 16.2 percent in the global PC market in 2018, and their shipments were 56.332 million units and 41.911 million units, respectively.

Worldwide PC shipments stood at 259.4 million units in 2018, down 1.3 percent from 2017, marking the seventh straight year of decline, but a less steep drop compared with the past three years.

PC shipments to the US, EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) and Asia-Pacific markets were 14.2 million units, 20.9 million units and 24.2 million units respectively in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Gartner's senior principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa said the majority of the PC shipment decline in 2018 was due to weak consumer PC shipments. Consumer shipments accounted for approximately 40 percent of PC shipments in 2018 compared with 49 percent in 2014.

The market stabilization in 2018 was attributed to consistent business PC growth, driven by Windows 10 upgrades.

Lenovo Ends 2018 on High Note, Even as Global PC Market Sags

Chinese PC giant Lenovo Group Ltd. retained its global crown for a second consecutive quarter at the end of last year, with the company’s shipments posting growth even as the broader market contracted, according to two new surveys published on Friday.

Lenovo’s resurgence came on the back of its purchase of the PC assets of Japan’s Fujitsu Ltd. last year, which helped the company post growth for the year even as the global market shrank, according to research houses Gartner and IDC. That helped it to take the spot as the world’s largest PC seller from U.S. giant HP Inc. in last year’s third quarter, and retain that position in the fourth quarter as well.

Lenovo is still good but Need to Focus more on innovations and future techs as well as core tech parts!

Lenovo and Asus products quality are very good.

Acer quality is not good, but cheaper.

USA brand like Dell and HP have trottling issue for playing game for a bit long.
I am using Lenevo myself for 5 years still works well!

I currently have an AUS, using for four years now. Next will be Lenovo, or, if I can spend a bit more, Huawei.

Lenovo is very durable. I know people using their machines for six-seven years non-stop.

No better than an assembly line of a toy company, so there.

You could build your own assembly line ,we are waiting for it!

You know what I am talking about. I don't want to argue for the sake of arguing.
Lenevo need to focus more on innovations and RD and seek to master the core tech parts ,that is true.

Lenevo is not advanced enough, but it is still a relatively strong Chinese company, but needs to pay more attention to research and development, otherwise it may be replaced by Huawei.

Just like Nokia's mobile phone (Nokia's mobile phone quality is very good), it still will be replaced by the updated new geretation mobile phone, coz people's needs are also improving.

Lenovo is the leading company of PC industry of China. It has an overwhelming advantage over the others. But it didn't make any progressive move. Maybe I shouldn't go so far as to say it's an assembly line. It's just the Faw-Volkswagen of PC industry. Period.

They definitely need to increase R&D and move beyond the peers in innovation. Otherwise, they will join the bandwagon of many others as cheaper labor countries take up most of the production.

ACER face a similar fate and maybe ASUS will, too.

Nonetheless, they still are an important company for the country and their No 1 position is significant.

What makes me really angry about Lenovo is they don't even make any effort to become a great company like Huawei, Google or Apple. The leadership of Lenovo acts like a bunch of braggarts.

They also made some meaningless acquisitions in the past (as well as some good ones), I guess, such as Motorola Mobility.

I am still for cutting them some slack and giving them a second chance now that they made a come back. But, they need to shake off the getting old image of a brand because brand loyalty will not last forever.

Lenovo is like Apple, they specify and then let others build it, no investment in core technology. Huawei is an innovative company.
