ISLAMABAD:

Federal minister for planning and development warned Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) of dire consequences including ‘privatisation’ if it failed to improve its services.

Ahsan Iqbal stated this on his return from China at the Benazir International Airport where he was witness to chaos and mismanagement leading passengers to complain about the services of the national carrier.

Iqbal said that while waiting at the customs he saw officials giving VIP protocols. “Being a minister if I can stand in the queue then why VIP protocol to some people,” he questioned rhetorically.

He said that he would take the matter up with the authorities concerned and urge them to take action against acts of sheer negligence. “Everyone knows that PIA is one of the country’s overstaffed organisations, but there is no service,” he pointed out.

“We cannot allow a few thousand PIA employees to hold passengers hostage. We have to seriously think over some options, including privatisation of the airline to improve its service standard,” he said.

Talking to The Express Tribune Iqbal added that PIA had become a welfare organisation only for its employees, whereas the passengers faced problems due to its deteriorating standards. “I have warned them to either improve their services or be ready to face other options,” said Iqbal, adding that employees of the national carrier and their families enjoyed many privileges including free tickets but their contribution in terms of providing better services has been disappointing.

“PIA management should take initiative to improve its service standard to bring it at par with other international airlines”.

PIA, incurring a loss of billions of rupees every year, faces criticism from all quarters for its falling service standards despite receiving a huge chunk of funds from the national exchequer and ranking among one of the overstaffed organisations.

The federal minister said the government will no more tolerate the humiliating attitude of the PIA staff meted out to passengers or below par services provided during travel time. He took note of the luggage of passengers, arriving from Skardu and Karachi, being misplaced.

They need to privatize it already, all the lazy *** and incompetent people are working for PIA with basically government jobs.. that has no accountability.

To be honest airlines like Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Turkish, Malaysian etc are government run. At one point, PIA was one of the best airlines in the world when Noor Khan under the government was running it.

For now the Government of Pakistan should put pressure on Ministry. If it doesn't come out to be sucessful, then they should Privatize it

With being government owned, the same PIA ranked amongst the top 10 airlines of the world. Many of us wouldn't know that PIA was the pioneer in introducing flight entertainment system. The top of the line arab airlines, were erected and managed by Ex-PIA professionals. After Noor Khan, neither civilians nor military chairmen were able to stop PIA from dwindling. For what was once the pride of this nation, is a pain these days.

PIA is not a pain, only its maintainance department is generating good amount of money as told my my uncle who works there as an engineer

there is a hole in PIA's pot, its still making profits

How much is the govt going to sell it?

I got a couple dollars in my wallet right now. Wait it's probably going to be sold to the families in Politics.

Please first of all fire all middle-aged male flight-attendants and shoot the old hags. Buy new planes and improve the attitude of the remaining staff. They all need to be enrolled in some sort of personality development and anger management classes. :D

They all belong to influential political parties... remove this association and witness improvement.

Yups. I know. Not just political parties, but mostly sons/daughters/relatives of PAF/Army/Bureaucrats. This all *crap* talk by PML(N) / PPP or any governing party is all pure bullshit. None of them will ever do anything about it, they just have this habbit of playing games with statements.

Let's say that they do start fixing it, who will they fire first - son of a retired Major General or that of an AVM? Pakistanis and their way of doing things, you gotta love it. It's ALWAYS 99% TOPI-DRAMA, and 1%.......... well that too is drama, of other sorts.

Please, some one privatize Pakistan and stop drama of democracy/elections.
