Kolkata, July 10 (Anand Bazar Patrika)- The last known living Indian officer of Free India Legion of Nazi Germany's Waffen-SS has passed away due to old age in Kolkata. He was 98 years old.
Brojo Lal Mukherji born in Kolkata in May 1920, joined the British Indian Army in 1939 and was captured in Dunkirk by Germans in 1940 and soon joined a German army unit for Indian POWs along with nearly 4000 other Indians, the unit was up in assistance with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
Along with his unit he participated in combat in Normandy against advancing allied armies in 1944.
The same year he was promoted to SS-Obersturmführer (First Lieutenant).
After the Germany surrendered, most Indians soldiers on the axis side in Europe escaped to Switzerland but soon got deported to India at the insistence of British authorities and had to serve short jail sentences.
After India's independence, Mr. Mukherji shifted his career to banking and retired as a General Manager in the state run UCO bank.
He is survived by two sons, five grandchildren and a great granddaughter.
