Large bomb goes off in Bangkok

You're late to the party. Your dullard friends have already been through this and have got it wrong and been made to look very silly.

Thailand's junta leader Prayut Chan-O-Cha described it as the 'worst ever attack' on the kingdom, adding that the suspect was believed to be from country's north-east – the heartland of the anti-coup Red Shirt movement.
Prayut also said he believed Facebook messages apparently warning of an imminent danger to Bangkok ahead of the bomb came from an 'anti-government group' based in that area.

'We are looking for them now, some of them are in Isaan (northeastern Thailand),' he added.
This has been dismissed as not true.

Correct its not red shirts related .

This is Daesh related.

Does'nt this make a good case for international co-operation against Terror ?
Why is the international community so tardy in this respect ? We even saw the Chinese Govt. reluctant to step up when Terrorist Organisations were being named in the UN. Now there is a price to be paid for that.

Even the GCC is coming on board this joint effort as we just saw; which led to so much consternation and uproar among our pakistani colleagues on this forum. But nobody can escape from having to make this choice.

I guess we can rule out the insurgency in the South. This man is clearly not Asian, let alone ethnic Thai, or Thai Malay if from the south.
It seems foreign related. In a way it's better as had it come from the South it would have made reconciliation very hard and increased the conflict.
I hope Thai brothers and sisters find this coward and his backers.

Tianjin Police Department has detained owner-operator of the blasted dangerous goods warehouse. It's likely a civic-criminal case, though chances of terrorist attack are not ruled out yet.

Bangkok attack almost for sure is terrorist act. I have confidence that professional investigators from Thailand, China and Hong Kong will show some results very soon. If it's done by Southern Thai insurgencies, Royal Thai Army should retaliate, if not then China should deploy CPAP/PLA and strike their home base.
Sorry ,
Its not only about southern thia insurgents or Chinese insurgents but there is growing political displeasure going on between red shirts( the supporters )of ousted former thai PM Mr thaksin !
Reds has background of voilence & they were involved in many of violent activities .
Military & pro monarchy yellow shirts are one side & The majority of Thais are with thaksin mostly from the eastern & northern parts of thailand .
Most of Thai police been considered as the , loyalist of thaksin & thai army as pro monarchy .
No one can say any thing who is behind theses terrorist acts but general perception is of reds involvd in that .

Somyot: Sathorn, Erawan attacks work of same bombers
National police chief Somyot Pumpunmuang said the bomb tossed from a bridge at Bangkok’s Sathorn pier and yesterday’s bombing of the Erawan shrine are the work of the same perpetrators, some of whom may be foreigners.

After inspecting the scene at the busy Chao Phraya River boat terminal, Pol Gen Somyot said divers were able to recover a half dozen metal fragments of the pipe bomb thrown from the Taksin road and rail bridge near the waterway and the BTS Saphan Taksin station.

The device bounced off a post and into the nearby canal where it detonated harmlessly, sending up only a large plume of water. There were no injuries or damage.

Explosive ordnance disposal technicians found TNT was used in both devices, which had been stuffed into a metal pipe with a timed fuse.

Pol Gen Somyot said he believed there were more than one person behind the two bombings and that both Thais and foreign nationals were involved.

The Sathorn bomb was estimated to have a blast radius of 35-50 metres, less than half of the bomb left under a bench Monday night at the Hindu shrine at the Ratchprasong intersection.

The Sathorn bombing took place at 1.20pm, but half the pier remained open with boat operations continuing as normal. Police closed Sathorn Road to traffic from the pier to the Saphan Taksin Skytrain station to investigate.

Assistant police chief Prawut believed the perpetrator wanted to throw the bomb onto a busy walking platform leading to the pier but missed. CCTV footage taken at the time of the explosion showed people running down a causeway over the canal to escape the blast.

Police initially dispatched divers into the canal to try to recover any surviving pieces of the bomb that Transport Minister Prajin Juntong called an "improvised explosive device". Later, sandbags and pumps were brought into to drain the impact area to hasten the search for evidence.

Pol Gen Somyot admitted that police briefly arrested a foreign man at Suvarnabhumi airport who appeared similar to CCTV images of the prime suspect. Immigration officials initially stopped him due to a problem with his travel documents and released him so that he could fix it. He has not been allowed to depart Thailand for the time being.

Police would rule out he was the same man who appeared in the Erawan CCTV footage and are investigating further.

The police chief asked the public to send tips to authorities if they see someone they suspect was the man seen wearing a yellow shirt and leaving a backpack at the Erawan blast site.

Sathorn pier is a major terminal linking Chao Phraya River commuter boats and the nearby Skytrain station. It's also a major tourist stop, especially for Chinese tour groups.

ACM Prajin said the Sathorn bomb was an IED that was thrown. An IED is also blamed for Monday's devastating explosion at the Erawan shrine that officially has left 20 dead and 125 injured.

As I can see, all attentions are being directed to the patsies aka AQ/ ISIS (well, that's their purpose) instead of the root.
Never been targeted & never been in their list ?
Perfect place for them could be Burma ?
Why don't ?
But still nothing ?
So its just speculations cause most of the anti islamists gets their free way tickets ?lol

Correct its not red shirts related .

No its not ISIS ?
If it was then they should have posted it or announced it as another of their big deeds ?
Its not happening so don't bring foolish speculations cause its not ?
For ISIS or any other terrorist outfit Burma is more easy & attractive target where the govt is involved in mascaring rohinia Muslims ?

No.

Daesh=Israel?

Daesh is an insulting term we prefer to use to refer to ISIS/ ISIL.

Why Isis will hate it if we start calling them Daesh

ISIS will not murder or fool around with Myanmar man of balls.

The Myanmese will let the entire Islamo community pay with blood.

The reason Islamo is able to be treated like emperor while commiting terror is because USA is covering them through NGOs.

When Islamo commit terror, there will be race traitors NGO jumping up and accuse everyone else of discriminating against Islamo.

Islamo is a insect and maggots and they will crumbles like no body when a patriot is in charge.

In Kosovo, Islamo loses her pants like nobody. Then USA decided to bomb Serbia patriots, and now Kosovo is land of rape, murder, and sex slavery.

USA tactic is too harass Islamo on non critical issues and support Islamo on broad important issues. Then USA pretend ISlamo is her enemy but they are in reality allies.

Either the muslim terrorist did it or this is a false flag event. As for the red shirts, bombing religious shrine makes no sense as it will draw condemnation among people of Thailand and the lost of economic interest.

City police probe Uighur revenge motive for blast

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is refusing to say whether domestic politics or international conflict lies behind the deadly bombing at the Erawan shrine.

As police Tuesday evening stepped up their hunt for a man filmed at the shrine shortly before Monday's deadly blast, sources say the probe is focusing on a revenge motive by Uighur militants, after the Thai government deported Chinese Muslim migrants to Beijing in July.

Speaking in a televised address last night, Gen Prayut would not be drawn on the motive, saying he did not want to cause public panic or mislead investigators.

The prime minister went before the cameras after a second blast went off at Sathon pier about 1pm Tuesday, which police said was designed to inflict heavy casualties.

Assistant national police chief Prawut Thawornsiri said an improvised pipe bomb was thrown from Taksin Bridge, but hit a pillar and bounced into a canal where it detonated harmlessly.

Pol Lt Gen Prawut said he believed the perpetrator wanted to throw the bomb onto a busy walking platform leading to the pier but missed.

CCTV footage shows people running down a causeway over the canal to escape the blast.

Speaking on television, Gen Prayut sent his condolences to families of the victims killed and injured in Monday's blast at Ratchaprasong intersection, centred at the shrine, which killed 20 Thais and foreigners, and left 125 people injured.

"This incident shows us our country still has a person or a group of people with hostility to the nation operating actively," he said.

"They may be doing it for a political motive or to undermine the economy or tourism or for other reasons. The government will investigate and find the perpetrators and their accomplices as soon as possible," Gen Prayut said in the 10-minute address.

At a news conference earlier in the day, Gen Prayut declined to say whether the attack was perpetrated by Uighur militants as suggested by Chinese media and Thai police sources, but he urged the media to report responsibly and avoid causing panic.

"Whether this incident was motivated by domestic politics or an international issue, I don't want to give you an opinion because it could mislead investigators and cause panic," he said.

The bomb has already scared foreign tourists, with China, this country's biggest source of overseas arrivals, issuing a travel warning to its citizens.

Police sources said Uighur militants may have launched the attack in retaliation for Bangkok's decision to deport 109 Uighur refugees to China in July, which drew international criticism. Thai Muslim and human rights groups accused the government of separating the Uighur families by sending the male migrants to China and the women and children to Turkey.

Police deployed more officers to the Chinese embassy in Bangkok after its request two weeks ago. Intelligence from the Special Branch also suggested there could be an attack on Chinese tourists after Aug 11.

Meanwhile, police said they are hunting for a "Middle Eastern-looking man" caught on a closed circuit TV camera, whom they are "more than 50% certain" was the bomber. They are searching for the suspect in Nana sois 3, 5, 9 and 11, a neighbourhood popular with Uighur migrants.

The young, slightly built man wearing a yellow T-shirt and black-framed glasses, was carrying a backpack. He wanders around the shrine, and is seen sitting down and leaving the backpack there. Moments later he leaves the shrine and heads onto the street.

Police say he arrived in a tuk-tuk and left on a motorcycle taxi. They have asked the drivers to come forward. Police said the device which went off at the Erawan shrine, and the one at Sathon pier, were pipe bombs containing ball bearings. They were assembled professionally.

Pol Col Kamthon Ouicharoen, a bomb expert at the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said the first bomb was an improvised explosive device that looked like a model typically made abroad.

It was detonated by a timer similar to ones seen in Thailand in the past. But he said he found no connection to the bombs typically used in the deep South.

The Sathon bomb had a range of 30-50 metres, he said. "They aimed to inflict many casualties as that pier is frequented by many Thai commuters and foreign tourists," Pol Col Kamthorn said.

The police bomb squad found many 5-milimetre-diameter ball bearings scattered in the area, similar to those used by Iranian bombers found assembling a bomb in Soi Sukhumvit 71 on Feb 14, 2012.

RIP to the dead.

Is this a Buddhist or a Hindu shrine? The name we use "四面佛" (four-faced Buddha) seems to imply it would be a Buddhist shrine.

EDIT: I checked and apparently 四面佛 can also refer to a deity called Brahma.

Which still doesn't clarify if this is a Buddhist or Hindu shrine.

i believe it was a hindu shrine....didnt know there were hindus in thailand thought it was a Buddhist country with Muslim minority

Only time Pakistanis are in "uproar" is when your allies (who are currently getting THRASHED by the Pakistan Army) wage war against Pakistani soft targets like the APS School in Peshawar

Any international effort to curb terrorism wont be met with "uproar" by Pakistanis when Pakistani state has done its fair share to combat terrorism and keep Pakistan safe.

Did they not assault the Thai embassy in Turkey? I suppose we have to review this.

Yes, but I think those were Turkish groups with Uighur elements also.

Have to admit that Thailand really messed up sending the Uighurs back to China, that was really a bad move.
