Lal Masjid protesters receive 'threats from Taliban'

Political activist Muhammad Jibran Nasir, who has been spearheading protests against controversial Lal Masjid cleric, Maulana Abdul Aziz, has been threatened by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan Jamaat Ahrar (TTP-JA) spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan for his movement.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Jibran Nasir that he had received a call, allegedly from the spokesperson of TTP faction, Ehsanullah Ehsan. Nasir went on to add that he had recorded the conversation and verified the voice of the caller with the help of media contacts who were familiar with Ehsan’s voice.

Nasir, however, made it clear that he would not back down from their planned protests today (Monday) outside the Lal Masjid. “We are no afraid. We are not backing out,” Nasir told The Express Tribune.

“We are here to save our mosques. Our mosques should preach love and peace. They must present the right spirit of Islam,” Naisr said, adding that he had a detailed debate with the TTP spokesperson on Islam before the spokesperson made his threats.

Further, Jibran said that the mobile number being used by the caller originated from Afghanistan.

An FIR was lodged against Maulana Abdul Aziz at the Aabpara police station on Friday, three hours after protesters had gathered outside it demanding the cleric be arrested for supporting the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s Peshawar school massacre.

The TTP on December 16 stormed into an army-run school killing 148 people, including 132 children.

The Lal Masjid cleric openly sympathises with the TTP and militant group Islamic State and defended the dastardly attack in Peshawar as a reaction to a military offensive launched in North Waziristan.

Why would the Army do so? Unless he directly goes after the Army they will have no wish to embroil themselves in it. The fact remains that NO entity in Pakistan will ever take any step against a threat unless they themselves are threatened. There is another thread on Afghan refugees being expelled.. funny that it took 141 deaths for them to expel them.. while for the last twenty years millions of rupees on average of weekly extortion is being carried out from these settlements and that did not bother them.. Karachi along pays around 24 lac weekly to the settlement here and not one party except the MQM bothered to raise their voices against it? It is because they are not effected.
Traders in Peshawar end up paying million across the border but the JuI, ANP and now the PTI governments could not be bothered a bit about it because it did not effect them.

Around 48 people were killed in Karachi in a massive attack on Abbas town but there was no "national tragedy".
Within a month some 150 were killed in twin attacks on mosques in FATA.. but there was no "national tragedy".
Were these lives not valuable?

Because the problem had not hit home yet, now that the problem has hit home to the rest of the country.. suddenly its an issue.So the same goes for lal masjid.. the Army will do no such thing unless Abdul Aziz threatens them.

Every single life is valuable. But its just a matter of time and the leadership (Army). So many lives have gone in the past when Kayani was COAS but he never thought of doing an operation in N.Waziristan. Zarb-e-Azab didn't start after Peshawar incident my friend. We've got brave COAS Alhamdulilah. Every major decision related to terrorism has been taken by him from Operation to Capital punishment. So it would be unfair to say that army will act only when they get threatened.

what a shame!!! A terrorist organisation can stand behind their supporter openly but Government/Army can't stand behind a citizen who is demanding beautiful and peaceful Pakistan.

i agree with @Oscar , we are going on the path of bloody civil war , and this time it will be fought in our Cities not in tribal Areas ..
every big and powerful masjid and madarsa is like a time bomb ... sooner or later it will explode .
