Authorities on Monday sealed the commercial hub of Lal Chowk to prevent Shiite mourners from taking out a Muharram procession.
All the exit and entry points to the area were barricaded, preventing any vehicular movement beyond these points.
At some places, patients and ambulances were seen pleading before forces to let them cross the barricades.
“However, forces denied them permission to cross the points, saying they have strict directions not to allow anyone to cross,” said an eye witnesses.
Curfew has been imposed in eleven police station areas of the Srinagar city.
“No pedestrian or vehicular movement is being allowed,” locals of Dalgate told Greater Kashmir over phone.
An official said that strict restrictions have been imposed to prevent the Muharram procession which remains banned in the area since 1989 with the eruption of militancy.
In Batmaloo, Shiite mourners tried to take out a procession. However, police swung into action and detained them.
