Lahore bombings planned in Afghanistan
By: Ashraf Javed | Published: March 14, 2010
LAHORE In a major breakthrough, the intelligence agencies have nabbed the mastermind of Lahore blasts and his close aide in a pre-dawn raid in southern Punjab, sources concerned disclosed, adding that the attacks had been crafted at an Indian consulate in Afghanistan a couple of months ago.
Qari Muzammal, the close aide of the mastermind and a commander of the banned outfit, has confessed to the investigators that India provided cash and ammunition to his group through its consulates in Kandahar and Jalalabad to carry out attacks in Lahore.
The security agencies arrested the mastermind of the Lahore blasts, his crony Qari Muzammal and three foreigners during the successful operation. The sources, however, did not disclose the name of the mastermind and said he was being interrogated under tight security.
It is said that the culprit had just reached a remote district of southern Punjab when the security agencies carried out raids in the wee hours of Saturday, during which important evidence besides computer record, CDs and banned literature was also seized.
He directed the Lahore RA Bazaar attacks from Faisalabad, a source privy to the investigators said, adding that the attacks on Special Investigation Agency (SIA) building in Model Town and RA Bazaar were interconnected.
The mastermind of Lahore bombings left Faisalabad after local TV channels started airing the footage of the blasts, while he had directed the SIA building attack from Chakwal.
The security agencies traced his whereabouts after intercepting phone calls he was making to his group members in the tribal region near Afghan border.
In last December, a top Indian government official visited Kabul and met Qari Muzammal, who had fled to Afghanistan via Balochistan after the GHQ attacks in Rawalpindi. Two weeks ago, he infiltrated into tribal areas from Pak-Afghan border after a short visit to Mumbai, where he met top Indian officials and got brief training.
The blatant attacks occurred a day after Afghan President Hamid Karzai met President Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Gilani in the federal capital, assuring that Kabul would not allow India to use its soil for what he said, proxy war against its conjoined twin.
The sources said the commander of the banned outfit was captured from a district of southern Punjab but did not mention further details due to the sensitivity of the matter. It is also unwise to reveal at this stage the place where the mastermind of the Lahore blasts had been shifted for further interrogation, the sources maintained.
It is being stressed that the security forces have unearthed concrete evidences after the Lahore bombings, and interrogation of arrested terrorists would help smashing the terrorist network.
Meanwhile, security forces have been put on their toes to keep a vigilant eye on the movement of anti-country elements with heavy deployment around the crowded public places across the Punjab and major cities of Sindh and NWFP. Security has also been intensified around all the airports while snap checking of the vehicles and a massive search operation is underway.
The extraordinary security measures have been taken after the preliminary interrogation of Qari Muzammal.
According to intelligence sources, there is serious threat of brazen attacks on key government installations, multi-national companies and crowded public places.
The sources close to the investigators said New Delhi and its intelligence agencies were actively engaged in establishing links with disgruntled elements of Balochistan and Sindh for destabilising these provinces as well.
RAW is maintaining contacts, sources, and links in Pakistan through their consulates at Kandahar, Jalalabad and Dubai. Most of the staff at Indian consulates in Afghanistan has been picked up from intelligence and security organizations including RAW, Intelligence Bureau and Military Intelligence.
RAW has been providing reliable information and support to agents of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan to destabilise the country, by using disgruntled nationalists, activists of banned outfits and TTP elements.
Sources also believe that the UAE is being used as a launching pad for terrorist activities in Pakistan. Agents are getting hold of young, discontented elements and after carrying out their brainwashing, they are dispatched to Dubai. Indian Consulate in Dubai is issuing temporary passport to these activists for getting training and briefing.
After completion of formal training, they are pushed into Pakistan to carry out terrorist and sabotage activities. RAW is also morally and materially supporting activists in Southern Punjab.
The sacrifices made by Pakistani armed forces to fight the menace of terrorism are unprecedented and unmatchable. There has been colossal loss of life as terrorists have targeted the innocent civilians including women, children, mosques, markets and hospitals. The pattern of criminal acts of violence indicates the level of desperation among the terrorists. India is supporting these desperate terrorists to create unrest in Pakistan, analysts said.
AFP adds: The death toll from a twin suicide attack in Lahore rose to 57 on Saturday, as 12 more critically wounded died overnight, police said.
A total of 57 people have been killed and 134 were wounded in these suicide attacks, Chaudhry Mohammad Shafiq, a senior police official Saturday told AFP by telephone. He added that 12 seriously injured had died overnight in different hospitals. Mazhar Ahmad, chief of Lahore civil defence department also confirmed the death toll.
