Mob Burns Police Station After Suicide Bombs

A furious mob has set fire to a police station after officers failed to stop three suicide bombers killing up to 18 people at a religious march in the Pakistani city of Lahore.

The blasts took place at three separate sites amid a traditional mourning for one of Shiite Islam's most respected holy men.
After the blasts, the marchers set fire to a police station, another police building, two police cars and three motorcycles, said Zulfiqar Hameed, a senior police officer.
Sajjad Bhutta, a senior Lahore district administration official, told state-run Pakistan Television: "According to my information 18 people are dead and over 100 injured."
Some estimates have put the number injured at 143.
The bombs went off exactly at the time of breaking of fast in the ongoing holy month of Ramadan.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani condemned the blasts in a statement and said the attackers would not escape justice.
The incident appears to be the latest in a string of attacks by Sunni extremists against the minority Shiites they consider infidels.
Islamist extremists often attack Shiites, non-Muslims and others they deem unacceptable.
In July, twin suicide attacks at Pakistan's most popular Sufi shrine killed 42 people.
Another suicide bomber wounded eight worshippers at a Shiite mosque in eastern Pakistan.
But violence had become less frequent in Pakistan as the country struggled to deal with the devastating floods.
The latest attacks follow two days of government air raids on militant strongholds in the northwest region.
Pakistani forces killed up to 62 militants, their family members and other civilians with no ties to the fighters, officials said.

LAHORE: Three suicide bombers in Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore on Wednesday killed 18 people and wounded more than 100 during a Shiite mourning procession, police and rescue officials said.

Pakistan has been hit by a wave of Islamist militant attacks over the past three years which many attribute to Islamabad’s alliance with Washington and the US-led war against the Taliban in neighbouring Afghanistan.

The blasts hit exactly at the time of breaking of fast in the ongoing holy month of Ramadan.

“Eighteen people were killed and 143 others wounded in the three suicide attacks,” a senior local administration official, Sajjad Bhutta, told AFP.

“We have collected bodies of all the three bombers,” he said, adding that we are collecting more evidence from the site.

Top local administration official Khusro Pervez told reporters in Lahore that more than 100 people were wounded.

“The first blast took place immediately after the mourning procession ended followed by other two,” Pervez said.

He said that the police was trying to secure other areas, as the mourners are currently scattered everywhere in the area known as Karbala Gamey Shah, the traditional route where the mourning procession ends.

It is not the first time Lahore has seen violence directed towards religious groups.

In July, twin suicide attacks on an Islamic shrine in Lahore, capital of Punjab province and a major military, political and cultural hub, killed 43 people.

The two suicide bombers blew themselves up among crowds of worshippers at the shrine to Sufi saint Data Ganj Bakhsh.

In May, gunmen wearing suicide vests storm two places of worship belonging to the minority Ahmadis in Lahore, killing at least 82 people.

The United States last year approved a five-year 7.5 billion-dollar package aimed at reducing the appeal of extremists in the Islamic world's only declared nuclear power by building infrastructure, schools and democratic institutions.

But the United States remains wildly unpopular with the Pakistani public, enflamed by a covert US drone war against Islamist targets in lawless tribal on the Afghan border that Washington considers the global bastion of Al-Qaeda.

There were no immediate claims for the latest attack, which came as the United States added the Pakistani Taliban to a blacklist of foreign terrorist organizations, which means members face asset freezes and travel bans.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton designated the Tehreek-e-Taliban as a foreign terrorist organisation on August 12, and it was formally added to the list when it was published Wednesday in the Federal Register.

“I conclude that there is a sufficient factual basis to find that the relevant circumstances described in section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act... exist with respect” to the group, she wrote.

“Therefore, I hereby designate the aforementioned organization and its aliases as a foreign terrorist organization pursuant to section 219 of the INA,” she wrote according to an email distributed by the State Department.

Pakistan is currently battling devastating flooding that has left confirmed 1,760 people dead and more than 2,000 injured, but officials warn that millions are at risk from food shortages and disease. – AFP

Blasts kill 28 in Pakistan’s Lahore, 170 hurt

Wednesday, 01 Sep, 2010

LAHORE: Three bombs exploded at a Shi'ite procession in the Pakistani city of Lahore on Wednesday, with a mounting death toll of 28 people and wounding over 170, piling pressure on a government already overwhelmed by floods.

Police said two suicide bombers blew themselves up in a crowd, after a lull in violence during the floods, the type of attack that Pakistani Taliban militants have claimed in the past.

Sajjad Bhutta, a senior Lahore official, told Reuters the death toll had climbed to 20, with at least 170 wounded. Rescue services said 25 were killed.

Some sources have said that the death toll has risen to 28.

Soon after the Lahore blasts, a mob set fire to a police station. People also beat policemen, witnesses said.

Pro-Taliban Sunni militants frequently attack Shi'ites as part of a campaign to destabilise the US-backed government.

The renewed violence came as millions of Pakistanis continued to struggle for food and water more than a month after the worst floods in the country's history, deepening concerns over the stability of the country.

The floods have ravaged Pakistan’s economy, Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said, with massive job losses and soaring inflation expected to hurt a nation whose stability is vital to the US war against militants in both Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“The floods have inflicted damage to the economy which may, by some estimates, reach $43 billion, while affecting 30 percent of all agricultural land,” Gilani said briefing the cabinet.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy, with cotton the main cash crop. The sector is a major source of employment.

Facing the prospect of long-term economic pain, Pakistan hopes the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will soften the terms of an $11 billion loan. Pakistani and IMF officials are meeting in Washington to work out the impact of the floods.

“This economic loss will translate into massive job losses affecting incomes of thousands of families, which may have serious social implications,” said Gilani, whose government was heavily criticised for its slow response to the catastrophe.

Pakistan’s military has taken charge of relief efforts, but some charities, some linked to militant groups, have also stepped in, raising concerns they may exploit public anger.

The United States on Wednesday formally added Mehsud’s Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or Taliban Movement of Pakistan, to its blacklist of foreign terrorist organisations subject to travel and economic sanctions.

The TTP is the main Pakistani militant alliance which operates from Pakistan’s northwest.

It is suspected of being behind most bomb and suicide attacks across Pakistan.

Before the floods struck a vast swath of the country, the army said it had scored major gains against the Taliban. In renewed air strikes in the northwest, Pakistani forces killed up to 62 militants, their family members and other civilians with no ties to the fighters, officials said on Wednesday.

Washington has repeatedly urged Pakistan to go after militant sanctuaries in the northwest saying these have helped boost the Afghan insurgency, now at its deadliest. Pakistan says it is doing all it can to fight the militants.

Testing ties further, Pakistan’s army said on Wednesday it scrapped talks with US military officials after a military delegation sent to Washington had to go through “unwarranted” airport security checks.

British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said it could take Pakistan years to recover from the floods with threats from water-borne disease and opportunistic militants.

“The danger always is that you get groups who have an ulterior motive who provide aid to try to curry favour,” he said after visiting an aid camp. – Reuters/Dawn News

yup u r ryt
they are not human

Nawaz Sharif 's darbari Rana Sana needs to explain his links with LeJ . For votes these people can call a donkey their father.

This reaction that I see from a number of posters that these people are not Muslims or humans is very odd because they are both of those things.

Firstly you should accept that these people are Muslims and humans, only then you can tackle this problem. By continuously repeating this, you just brush off the core issue on why this occurs.

The twisted ideology and mindset is the problem. This problem can only be solved with a change of thinking that will take time to sift in over the years.

Death toll is increasing, right now 48.
Ah, again its not new for shia, even quran pointed finger on that kharji clan in early few verses " a small clan of people who will spread destruction.shar/terror on earth in the name of allah and kill muslims ". Unfortunately these munfiq/wahabis wearing the skin of Sunnis. Now slowly even Sunnis start isolating them, so they start targeting Sunnis too.
Only Munfiq can do this. What unfortunate Allah has selected them for forgiveness. And these people selected this month to kill the innocents.

And Please, don't call us minority. Its our Pakistan and we are part of it.Please don't write any line which shows the division among Muslims.
