Kuwaiti emir grants $4bn, free food to citizens

KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait's Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on Monday ordered the distribution of $4 billion and free food for 14 months to citizens as the emirate prepares to mark national occasions.

The state news agency KUNA reported that Sheikh Sabah has ordered the gifts for all the estimated 1 million Kuwaiti citizens.

It even covers newborns until Feb. 1. But excluded are the more than 2 million foreigner workers, mostly South Asians.

The food program is expected to offer free staples such as rice, eggs and milk until March 2012.

The reason is three upcoming milestones: 50 years of independence, the 20th anniversary of the US-led invasion that drove out Iraqi troops and the fifth year of Sheikh Sabah's rule.

The announcement was made following an overnight meeting of the Cabinet.

Inflation in Kuwait soared to 5.9 percent in November, the highest in 20 months on the back of high food prices which rose by 12.3 percent.

The fifth largest OPEC producer has posted budget surpluses in each of the past 11 fiscal years, totaling more than $140 billion, and is also headed for another healthy surplus this year thanks to rising oil price.

The government has made similar but smaller grants in the past.

The state provides a cradle-to-grave welfare system to its citizens who receive most public services and petrol at heavily subsidized prices and pay no income tax.

Some 80 percent of Kuwait's 360,000-strong national workforce are employed in government jobs, where the average monthly wage is more than $3,500.

Simply because they are "Gastarbeiter". But the Emir or his govt. could'nt care less about the "Gast" (Guest) and can only see "Arbeiters" (Labourers).
Any way, before the Oil brought the deluge of dollars to Kuwait, Kuwait was a penal settlement of the Caliphs of Baghdad and the Emirs were Bedouin shepherds.

Long journey that, only broken by Saddam Hussain and when the munificent Emir had to flee with his gold and baubles.

Every government of the world provides facilities to its people.
US govt gives unemployment allowance to its citizens but not to foreign workers. Will u say the US govt is also racist ?

So it comes down to individual choices, and its part and parcel of the deal.

Dude I am not going to sit and defend the wrongs of Arabs cause they think they are better then every one else, yes they are racist. But you know what we desis are more racist then them Arabs, they atleast get along with each other. We barely get to the point of tolerating our existence, let alone tolerating other desis.

Considering that 60% of there foreigners are manual laborers who work at the lowest wages in the world. They are the one who should be given such facilities to begin with if the emir is really interesting in marking something memorable. Arabs have not outgrown their imperial mentality.

well at least its their country and their emir has the right to give free food to his citizens(though I doubt they need it or not). And here we are quarreling if its right or wrong. Well the emir doesn't care 'bout us or any other nations citizen.
But still I can't stop myself from thinking how much help this 4bn$ would have helped the Palestinians.
Anyways the good thing 'bout us is that we can at least protest whats right or wrong while some of the Arabs(not all) indulges themselves in their pleasure.
