Kurdish YPG captures jihadist key border cross on Iraq border

Damascus (AFP) - Fierce clashes raged Saturday after YPG seized from jihadists a crossing on the Iraqi border, a key supply route for weapons and fighters in the 31-month war, activists said.

UN and Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi meanwhile was due to visit Iran as he presses efforts to build a consensus for a Geneva conference aimed at ending the conflict that has killed tens of thousands.

Fighters from both sides were killed in the border clashes, which came a day after Syria's government and its opponents traded blame for a car bomb attack on a mosque that left dozens dead.

The Kurds "took control of the Al-Yaarubia border crossing with Iraq at dawn after clashes with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, the Al-Nusra Front and other rebels," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, citing activists.

The Kurds have been struggling to carve out an autonomous northeastern region similar to one in northern Iraq, further complicating the Syrian war.

Clearly, the Kurdish fronts getting support from the Iraq government because they have supported the autonomy in Iraq and they wanted to prevent extremist to take stronghold in between borders. They might change tactically after Turkey, a fierce enemy of the Kurdish militancy and the Iraq government agreed to counter the rise of Al Qaeda in both borders.

Iraq supporting YPG and the Western Kurds? I do not think the Iraqis would like that, nor do I think that would be possible. Even KRG has had difficulties showing their support to YPG due to Turkish pressure, so I do not think Iraq could to it either. But obviously there is a shared interest from most actors in the region to counter Al Qaeda and the YPG seems to be very good at it.

Not really support, but interveneted in the clashes near the border by attacking ISIS/Nusra controlling the border, it’s the same border crossing as last firefight when Iraq did it.

But the ISIS has been operating in the area for a long time now. To me it seems the Iraqi army has not been able to counter ISIS on the Iraqi side of the border. This video is from March... I might be wrong though. All I know is that Al-Yarubiya has been a safe heaven for ISIS for far too long.
