ISLAMABAD: Contrary to the claims of Chairman PTI Imran Khan who says Rawalpindi / Islamabad Metro can be built with just Rs4 billion, the PTI-led KP government has prepared a pre-feasibility study for constructing a metro bus in Peshawar at an astounding cost of Rs51.67 billion.

This pre-feasibility study done by transport department of Planning and Development of KP government has exposed the claims of PTI leadership on the ongoing Metro Bus Project being executed by federal and Punjab governments in Rawalpindi and Islamabad with the estimated cost of Rs47 billion.

The cost of Rawalpindi / Islamabad metro bus project is less than what the KP government has estimated for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) for Peshawar city.

The summary of pre-feasibility study conducted by the KP government, a copy of which is available with The News, reveals that fully elevated Metro Bus project in Peshawar from Chamkani to Hayatabad Complex, having length of 27 kilometer (KM), is projected to cost Rs51.67 billion.

The summary states that the study is a Pre-feasibility study that was completed in four months. The study further recommends conducting a feasibility study that will take one year to complete. The study recommends a full-fledged study.

It further states that Corridor 2 is selected as priority corridor 1 to be operated under the Bus Rapid Transit mode. The route of corridor connects Northern bypass/Motorway interchange/Chamkani on Peshawar-Rawalpindi Road/GT road, Kabul bus terminal, Daewoo bus terminal, Peshawar bus terminal, Frontier College for woman, Cantt railway station, airport road, Peshawar University, Hayatabad Medical Complex.

The study recommends that corridor 6 should also be evaluated as an alternate corridor in the feasibility study. The corridor 6 consists of Chamkani Terminus to Hayatabad Terminus via rail corridor around the airport (length 26.2 Km). The pre-feasibility study recommends Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) for priority corridor.

The study recommends two years for the construction of the corridor. The study gives three options for BRT along with their respective capital costs as follows:

i. At-grade BRT: Capital cost of Rs11.615 billion,

ii. Partially elevated BRT: Rs17.977 billion,

iii. Fully elevated BRT: Rs51.675 billion.

The rates have been calculated as per international practices cited in ADB literature.

The salient features of the Priority Corridor 2 Peshawar Rapid Transit will have route length of 27.2 Km, 32 median stations with single platform, using this service by 223,000 passengers per day.

There will be 61 articulated buses required. The system includes E-ticketing, Depot, Control Centre, CCTV and Security.

The shortcomings of the study also illustrate that the estimated Capital cost of the project for three options are based on similar practices in Pakistan and may further increase. The overall length of the elevated section is not decided; therefore the cost of BRT can increase further.

The rider ship is estimated based on traffic counts at 10 locations. A transport modeling study was not conducted due to which the estimated rider ship may be questioned. The proposed cost of the feasibility study is unreasonably high, it further states.

ridiculous news, it clearly says "Fully elevated BRT will cost Rs51.675 billion.

despite the fact that I see no priority in these kind of stupid and low priority projects, pmln makes it so that sharif family can earn billions of money out of it and to show public development, stupid enough to believe.

Its not ridiculous. Its one of the options which can be selected. The other two options still exceed Rs.4 Billion claim. Asad Umar was challenged to build something in KP with that amount.

by the way Asad Umar has denied any metro project, the only project he said is Mass Transit.

nonetheless its waste of 3rd world country's money to have fancy projects.. should spend on human development instead..

Whats the purpose of a fully elevated BRT? When you can get an elevated metro rail having higher capacity at similar cost ?

this project is being worked upon and not any metro. @cb4

This under it. Sky-Train Project Under Peshawar Rapid Mass Transit System

And if we can setup businesses instead of such fancy projects..I think would be far better, and even best if all of it is spent on human development.

Well possible it can also be used later for monorail/metro train

Kahan gai wo loog jo kehte thy Rawalpindi Islamabad Metro 4 billion me bn'ni chahye :omghaha::omghaha::omghaha::omghaha::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Troll Thread.

It is clear that the project is only in planning stages. No one can say at this stage, how much it would cost. All the hullabaloo is premature.

It is interesting to note that PML-N by addressing a public need has set an agenda for others to follow - willingly or unwillingly. There could be a lot of co-operation in this regard, but priorities of PTI are so very lop-sided right now towards agitation as opposed to development.

I suppose in about a year and a half, when nobody would be interested in mid-term elections, PTI would finally focus on development.

Bad policy.

monorail is not possible-but metro? I guess if the slopes of flyovers aren't steep, and viaduct can support the weight.

Lets forget Peshawar for a minute. Its still on paper.

Take the case for Rawalpindi - Islamabad twin cities. The project there is being divided. Islamabad's red zone was seen crucial therefore they decided to build different type of infrastructures.

I was hoping for a Metro Rail in Pindi due to the fact that its population is large and the city itself is dense. It turns out they are not ready for that yet. For a trial run for few years they decided to go ahead with Metro Bus elevated .

Here you can see below it has been designed to accommodate Light Rail in the future

Metro bus track to have train compatibility

Rawalpindi—The Punjab Government on Friday formaly announced to perform groundbreaking of the multi-billion Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Project on March 23, ending all speculations about fate of the long-awaited scheme. Commissioner Rawalpindi Zahid Saeed, briefing the media here, said the 22.5 kilometer track would have train compatibility to meet future needs of mass transit.

“If the number of passengers increase manifold in next five to ten years, the track will be compatible enough to switch over to mass transit train,” said Zahid Saeed, who is also the Project Director.

The project, being executed at a cost of Rs 43 billion, would be completed in 10 months to ensure speedy and decent transport service for the residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

He said construction companies would work round-the-clock to meet deadline, while a lane on each side of busy Murree Road would be kept open for traffic during the period.

He apprised that 8.6 kilometer elevated track, having 10 stops, would be constructed from Flashman’s Chowk, Saddar upto Faizabad.

“The track will pass over Mareer railway bridge and Committee Chowk underpass, while it would go along the 6th Road and Chandni Chowk flyovers,” he said.

The Metro Bus would make stopovers at 10 points including Flashman’s, Mareer, Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk, Waris Khan, Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Rehmanabad, 6th Road, Shamsabad and Faizabad. Approximately, he said, 14 kilometer track would be laid in the limits of the federal capital, where bus terminals would be set up at every one kilometer distance as per international standards.

“The terminals will have all facilities like escalators, lifts for disabled and senior citizens, generators and public toilets and tight security all along the bus track,” he maintained. Replying to a question, the Commissioner said, the Project would have no negative impact on environment in Rawalpindi and Master Plan of the federal capital.

Initially, he said, 60 buses would ply on the route with two minutes interval to facilitate around 150,000 commuters daily, between the twin cities.

To another question, he said, 28 kanal of land would be acquired for setting up bus terminals in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, of which 20 kanals and 16 marlas were needed in the garrison city. “Land acquisition process is in progress,” he said.
