KP lawmakers seek negotiations with militants - thenews.com.pk

PESHAWAR: Condemning bomb blasts and killing of people in Peshawar, Quetta and Karachi, legislators in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Monday urged the government to take practical steps and hold negotiations with militants as it was the only way to end the conflict.
The lawmakers said they should make collective efforts to rid the nation of the problem instead of taking political benefit from the issue by hurling accusations against each other. The House offered fateha for the departed souls and prayed for the recovery of the injured victims of the bomb blasts. They asked the federal government to evolve a comprehensive policy to bring the conflict to an end.

The emotionally charged members from the treasury and opposition benches exchanged hot words during the debate. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)’s Nighat Orakzai later staged a walkout to protest against what she termed unparliamentary language of some of the ruling party members. She, however, ended her boycott on the pursuance of Law Minister Israrullah Khan Gandapur.

Nighat Orakzai observed that the federal and provincial governments had no coordination on the issue and it was astonishing that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan was asking Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif to formulate national policy on terrorism and drone attacks. She said the time has come to stand up against the militants who were neither human beings nor Muslims.

Minister for Public Health Engineering Shah Farman recalled that his party had always suggested resolving the issue through negotiations. He said they would have to run the affairs of the government within constitutional limits, adding that the federal government would have to evolve policy on US drone attacks. He said the provincial government would offer its cooperation and go a few steps ahead if the federal government took any decision in this context.

Without naming anyone, he observed that some people allowed killing of our people after getting US dollars. He questioned why the former rulers sold their own people and allowed killing of the innocent.

The PTI-led ruling coalition members shouted at Nighat Orakzai when she interrupted the minister, saying she would not return to the House until the members of the treasury benches were taught the parliamentary language.

Awami National Party (ANP) parliamentary leader Sardar Hussain Babak observed that terrorists have openly come out to kill and kidnap people for ransom. He said his party had paid the price for resisting the Taliban. He said the PTI had committed to restore peace but its leaders were now blaming the ANP for the crisis. He said the rulers should play their role instead of waiting for the federal government policy.

The ANP MPA said that if drones were violating Pakistan’s sovereignty then the Uzbeks, Chechens, Arabs and other foreign nationals were also violating the country’s sovereignty due to their illegal presence in Pakistan. He asked the members to oppose both types of violations and take collective steps to overcome the problem.

Mufti Janan of the JUI-F demanded an end to the ongoing genocide of Pakhtuns. “The injustices against Pakhtuns have made out people suffer and forced their children to find food in heaps of garbage on the streets,” he lamented.

Senior Minister Sikandar Sherpao of Qaumi Watan Party said the ongoing fire could engulf Islamabad if it was not extinguished now. He said their province was passing through a difficult time but it was not the proper time for getting political mileage from it.

He said it was astonishing that those who had been at the helm of affairs for five years were making accusations against the new government that has not yet completed one month. He said they would have to look back to the 1970s and find out who were working for whom, adding that only Pakhtuns were killed in the war of international powers.

The JUI-F’s Maulana Lutfur Rehman said they would have to find out the causes before talking about the solution as it would be difficult to solve the problem without knowing the reasons for the ongoing wave of terrorism. He said they would have to think whether they had power and could get the required results. He also suggested collective measures for the solution of problems.
