For the longer term, President Lee Myung-bak's conservative government could seek to alter the alliance's command structure and Seoul's weapons arsenal in ways that would affect the Pentagon's current strategic planning for Northeast Asia, according to these officials

South Korean defense strategists already are publicly pressing Mr. Lee to delay the planned 2012 transfer of operational control of the combined U.S.-South Korean fighting force to Seoul from Washington, arguing South Korea isn't prepared yet to oversee American forces.

The agreement between Washington and Seoul has a clause that allows South Korea's president to formally request a suspension of the transfer. The U.S. currently deploys 29,000 troops in South Korea, and the South Korean military deploys 600,000.

Currently the transfer of wartime operational control of US troops in Korea to Korean defense ministry is set to 2015(Agreed to no more delay). After this point, the US troops are controlled by the Korean MoD's Chief of Staff in war time.

Korea is the only country where US troops come under the control of a non-US government in wartime. Why? Because Korean military command is considered to be competent enough to command US troops by the US, which may stun Chinese nationalists.

highly doubt it. just like afganistan is being ran by an afghani (karzai). south korea will always be under the control of the US. there is nothing you can do about it, you may however wish for the demise of the US, or just wait until the US collapses.

this is just the US fooling angry south koreans who want the US out of their country. but you shouldn't worry about this as you are supposedly a "south korean" living in the US.

That's the agreement between Barack Obama and Lee Myung Bak. After 2015, the ROK Defense Ministry controls the US troops in war time.

The US troops in Afghanistan are controlled by the US. The US is notorious for refusing to hand over the control of its troops to anyone save for just two whom the US think is competent enough to command the US troops; the NATO and the Korean Defense Ministry.

the thing with south korea is they are not an independent country. they are an extension of the US empire but with limited autonomy. anything south koreans say can simply be ignored. why talk to the US through south korea when you can talk to US directly?

More like the US troops will be in North Korea upon Kim Jong Eun's regime collapse. The US troops take orders from the Korean defense ministry from 2015 and onward and the Korean defense ministry will surely bring the US troops along with its own troops.
