Korea widens lead over Japan, Detroit in car quality

....
With that mental process and that kind of dedication --- I'm not surprised at all that Koreans will work hard to increase the quality of their products, thus their products perceptions abroad. So definitely, not surprised at all, and I'm happy for them. Definitely is a lesson for us Japanese how to be and to re-learn in how it means to sacrifice (self annihilation for excellence).

Japan and S Koreans are the role models for anyone wanted to produce "perfect" looking artifacts.

It is an amazing quality of any nation, to have pride in their work. I hope they both never loose this.

Thank you, my friend. I think we Japanese are just mediocre, we are not that nationalistic, really. In terms of nationalism and national devotion, the Koreans really defined that aspect. I see the Koreans as a role model; their level of devotion to work and to organization is something that all developed and developing countries should aspire for.

I'm sorry Japanese and Korean don't belong in the same category when it comes to the quality of their cars. Let's look at the British and wider Northern European markets where disposable income isn't an issue. Consumers from these markets weigh up factors such as quality and efficiency very careful before selecting models. Time and time again we see Japanese and Germans cars coming out tops.

The Koreans have a long way to go in catching the Japanese.

They are catching up quickly bro. With the recent Takata air bag issues in the United States market, that really put a damper in production, and that led to an internal auditing in Japan of Takata air bag production sites, and led to revelation that there were operational issues and production failures. No doubt this will affect public perception , and that can only be addressed by 1) full apologize by Takata , 2) recall of all affected automobiles , 3) fines, 4) more qualitative improvement.

The Koreans have made huge leaps and bounds in the high electronic market and practically unseated Japan in the mobile phone industry , as well as destroying our plasma / hd tv industry sector.

That reveals that there are issues in creativity and ingenuity Japan needs to address. Koreans have a better , creative marketing system than Japanese. They're just really aggressive business folks. And i credit that to them, as they should be.

Japan is struggling behind, lagging, and we need to find a way to reverse that.

Right now the Chinese and Koreans are pushing ahead.

The thing is bro the Takata issue didn't effect sales in the UK or Europe as much. Sales have picked up again in the US. Many firms go through such industrial blips, but with the Japanese and Kaizen, they'll learn and incorporate this through continues improvement.
I know they have done well in consumer electronics, but this was in part due to Japanese firms not innovating enough, take for example Apple which took the initiative with MP3's, it's an open secret that board members from Sony actually dismissed the idea as a short-term fad, and not worthy of investment. In the corporate world you can never be too sure of yourselves.
Going back to the comparisons with Japanese firms, the car industry is incredibly more complex, which makes the gap harder to close. I don't see them doing this anytime soon.

Certainly the Koreans have seen an opportunity with electronics and have done very well.

As for cars usually a stigma lasts a generation. Certainly Hyundai, Kia (and even the German luxury maker Audi Sudden unintended acceleration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) got hit bad about 25 years ago and have been creeping back from the bottom of the sales barrel since.

If you owned a Hyundai in the '80s or '90s people laughed at you. It was the poor man's new car. It would have black dots all the way down in Consumer Report's reliability ratings. Kia was so bad I think they simply stopped selling them.

I don't think many people here blame Toyota for the airbag screwup.

Toyota still #1 (and #2....hmm a Volkswagen broke into the top 20!)

@Nihonjin1051 What happened to you Asian Tigers since the 80's? Did massive government debt kill your economy just like Greece?

For East Asian developing nations, Japan and Korea are the trend-setters in excellence in manufacturing. China has learned a lot from Japan's economic development model. No wonder East Asian (North East Asian, to be more precise) development model is called "flying geese model." You guess who is the leader of the pack.

Plaza Accord

It doesn't explain anything, like why an asian economic giant collapsed like house of cards with the bust of asset price bubble. It doesn't make any sense.
He won't post anything bad about Japan economy. Just google Plaza Accord put in by US and four of her allies. That killed the Japanese world economic domination.

Checked out the RIo, the Focus and the Civic. At the end, stuck with the Civic even though the other guys had better kit in certain cases. So far after 10000mi.. my ownsership costs for the civic less fuel have been $60..and it purrs like it just came off the line even after the potholed streets of southern USA.
By contrast, the number of owners selling off their rio's and focuses during the same time is hilarious.
