The four-member committee set up by Tamil Nadu government virtually gave a clean chit to the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP), saying it was well-equipped to withstand natural calamities, be it earthquake or tsunami.

Emerging from the two-hour long talks with members of People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), committee Convenor S Iniyan told reporters that they inspected the KNPP yesterday for more than three hours and reviewed the safety measures put in place to deal with any contingency.

"From our inspection we have gathered that KNPP can withstand tsunami strikes as the plant is 20 feet above the sea level. The reactors, which are of third generation, would automatically shut down in case of any problem," he said.

KNPP also has a passive heat removal system and high-power diesel generators to meet any situation, said the Convenor, adding these safety measures had been certified by authorities concerned.

Iniyan said talks with the PMANE group, spearheading the protest against the KNPP, was "cordial", but the committee rejected their demands to hold discussions with PMANE's expert group and to meet people of the coastal villages surrounding Koodankulam.

Stating that these were not in their mandate, Iniyan said the committee, set up by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, was given two tasks – reviewing safety features in the plant and allaying the concerns of the people.

"We undertook an inspection of the plant yesterday and understood the concerns of the local people through our talks with their representatives today. We will go back to Chennai and study the documents provided by the plant officials and submit our report," he said.

TN govt panel gives clean chit to KNPP over safety aspect

Just because the UPA got thrashed in TN the kongress wants the state to suffer.

just how stupid are you? its was the local government who using its influence tried to have it stopped. its nothing but a political gimmick .
its getting to be a pain to read all your anti congress remarks , especially where none are warranted.

Useless foreign owned NGO's must first be kicked out from the country.... these jokers sleep till the project comes to final completion and then begins their age-old drama of democracy... idiots..

You are wrong.

Neither the Central Govt nor the State Govt was against the KNPP. The protests also were never political.

It was the local NGOs and some shady evangelist groups who were the main instigators of the agitations.

we all know, no need of personal attacks.. do you know what happened during lokpal bill ??

It wasn't a personal attack, it was a legitimate question. A personal attack is a logical fallacy that is committed when a person substitutes abusive remarks for evidence when attacking another person's claim or claims - like saying that since somebody is reprehensible in his private life as an individual, his claim is invalid. That's what a personal attack is.

I know a lot about the lokpal bill, what exactly are you asking or trying to say, and what's the relevance of that in this thread?

I don't think that this is over, I saw the leader of the PMANE leader Udhayakumar speaking to the local TV channel, I hate these stupids.... For this case I feel so much irritated... We should make these people stand in a line and shoot them down. We should chase these people out of India... We should get their Indian citizenship.

Almost 80% of TN has atleast 8 hours power shutdown.

Had our Tamil fellow countrymen not protested, it could have saved so much trouble. It was for their benefit and see all this needless delay had to happen.

There is nothing which happens which is not political in nature in India, especially when large scale mobilisation of people over prolonged periods is happens. Politics permeates every nook and cranny of our society.
There is really no alternative to nuclear power for meeting our shortfall of electric power generation. As long as the nuclear establishment is serious about safety measures and takes reasonable precautions, we can do without vested interests igniting false popular sentiment and holding up the projects. It is bad for our international image, a disincentive to foreign investors and provides no relief from the killing power cuts in the summer.
