KLJ-7A AESA radar being considered for China’s J-20 fighter aircraft

The Nanjing Research Institute of Electronics Technology’s (NRIET’s) KLJ-7A active electronically scanned-array (AESA) radar is being considered for use with China’s J-20 multirole ‘fifth-generation’ fighter aircraft, a Chinese industry source has told Jane’s .

The radar, a mock-up of which was displayed by NRIET in a three-array configuration at the Airshow China 2018 on 6–11 November, is one of the options being evaluated for use on the platform, said the source, without providing further details.

The KLJ-7A is an advanced variant of the KLJ-7 (also referred to as Type 1478) X-band airborne fire-control radar (FCR) that has previously been presented in a number of different configurations.

WOW this is significant and very good news for Thunder. If PLAAF selects this for J-20, it will mean ongoing technical upgrades and the very best technology. With the scale generated by J-20, the price will also remain low for Thunder. @Dazzler

It means this is future front line radar not some middle tier system, very good news but let's wait for Block-3 radar first.

It was tested on one of the prototypes as per my info.

I personally think that there might be a bit of miscommunication between the Zhuhai personnel and the Jane's journalist.

Don't get me wrong, KLJ-7A is a great radar for its class. However, it in its present form is too small for J-20's radome. I think what the industrial source meant to say was that the technology used on KLJ-7A (three-array configuration, wind-cooling, etc.) will be used on a future variant of the J-20 radar.

If I am not wrong , J-20 radar designation maybe KLJ-10A.

If I am not wrong , J-20 radar designation maybe KLJ-10A.

There are multiple elements. The T/R modules, the computing architecture, the software. KLJ-7A will definitely benefit if the same teams are involved in the computing architecture and software. Thunder will be small brother for J-20 :D
