What's new

KLJ-7A AESA radar being considered for China’s J-20 fighter aircraft | Janes

These two new radars will be great for JF-17. The cheaper air cooled version to upgrade on the first JF-17 and later ones with newest type that shares many components and technology with J-10 and J-20. Can keep costs under control and offer high technology.

It seems that way, but we'll have to wait for a proper announcement.
1st pic is of klj-7a
While 2nd is of Klj-7av2
#klj_7a is going to replace klj-7 of Block I and Block ii( #JF_17Thunders) of #Pakistan_Air_Force

While #klj_7Av2 is to be selected for #Jf_17 block iii
#KLJ_7av2 is a very major upgrade to block iii standard...
More details would be presented in detailed article in few days.
Note: both are #AESA_RADARS

RBE2-AESA with possibility of Tracking range around +170 KM (link, link-2)
PAF guys are having a shit time finding Thunders at those ranges.

Maybe, JF-17 Blk I & II upgraded with the air cooled LKF601E AESA radar and Rafale can find each other almost at the same time. (The number of LKF601E's T/R modules is 864, while the one of Rafale's REB2-AA is 836.)
And JF-17 Blk III with the KLJ-7A AESA radar should have a better performance.

keep in mind I was quoting Tracking range of RBE2-AESA radar its detection range is approximately +200 KM and it is superior to LKF-601E in this aspect which is having 170 KM detection range as quoted in its brochure

but achieving this range with light and compact air cool AESA is a great achievement and it will give a definitive edge to blk-I and blk-II JF-17 against any other fighter jet of Indian Air force if coupled with LRAAM

There are multiple elements. The T/R modules, the computing architecture, the software. KLJ-7A will definitely benefit if the same teams are involved in the computing architecture and software. Thunder will be small brother for J-20 :D

Do we know what the RCS of the detected aircraft is?

East Pendulum reported citing NRIET deputy director Wang Hongzhe that the KLJ-7A has a range of 170 km against aerial target with 3m² RCS (radar cross-section) or 200 km against aerial target with 5m² RCS. It can track 15 targets and engage four simultaneously. Though equipped with 1,000 TRMs, it is not known if the KLJ-7A’s TRMs are built from gallium arsenide (GaA) or gallium nitride (GaN).

Do we know what the RCS of the detected aircraft is?

two things
1- I was responding to a post related to LKF601E AESA radar
2- Your post is about KLJ-7A radar

two different AESA radar for different blocks of JF-17 with different T/R counts

Now your query about the RCS of targets in this case Rafale jet

- Different sources have estimated different RCS figure for Rafale jet some estimated it as low as 0.5 m/sq in clean configuration but for me it is very difficult to believe that Rafale with all the weapon load will have RCS below 2 m/sq (I may be wrong)

If we consider RCS for JF-17 with all weapon load equivalent to 3 m/sq (standard)

- than RBE2-AESA radar of Rafale Jet should detect it around +200 KM as estimated previously again tracking range would be approximately 170 KM (calculated range is +165 KM)

- KLJ-7A with 1000+ TR modules (reportedly GaN base TR modules) should also have at least same same range if not better (ideally KLJ-7A should have better range) so the reported range of 170 Km must be considered as Tracking range for a target having RCS of 3m/sq.

In this case the both KLJ-7A and RBE2-AESA should be considered equivalent.
