Saudi monarch King Salman bin Abdulaziz, is expected to hold a quartet meeting in Mecca on Sunday to discuss ways of supporting Jordan and helpng the nation overcome its economic crisis.
“In the context of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz’s interest on conditions of the Arab nation (Jordan) and his keenness on everything that promotes security and stability, he has closely monitored the economic crisis in Jordan,” a Saturday statement issued by the Saudi Royal Court said.
The statement added that King Salman held talks with each of Jordanian King Abdullah II, Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah of Kuwait and UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Deliberations yielded in arranging a four-sided meeting in Mecca which will discuss means to shoulder Jordan through its economic crisis.
Jordanian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ali Al Kayed told Asharq Al-Awsat that King Salman inviting the four Arab countries for a meeting establishes support to Jordan.
Saying that the quartet stands strongly by the economically struggling country, Kayed added that it will play a major part in maintaining Jordan’s security and stability. More so, Ambassador Kayed positively reviewed King Salman's efforts to stand by Jordan’s side.
For his part, former Jordanian Information Minister Nabil Sharif said that the Saudi initiative comes at the right time after a worsening economic crisis in Jordan.
Reiterating Saudi Arabia’s historical commitment to support other Arab countries, Sharif said that the move “is not strange for Saudi Arabia or King Salman.”
The former minister went on to say that the initiative “is a clear indicative for the strength of Jordanian-Saudi relations despite all speculations questioning bilateral relations."
“We believe that our shared Arab destiny is one and so is our destiny, and that whatever happens in any Arab country affects other countries ... The step taken by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques will establish a new Arab reality based on solidarity and continuous coordination,” Sherif added.
“We in Jordan are very grateful and delighted even before we know the results of this summit,” he said.
“We are very happy because it is a sincere gesture of brotherhood that reflects the interdependence of relations between our countries and our peoples,” Sherif added.
