King Mohammed VI , Moroccan King, To Announce Constitutional Reforms
RABAT, Morocco -- Morocco's king has laid out a series of constitutional reforms that he says will turn the North African country into a constitutional monarchy.
In a speech Friday night, King Mohammed VI said the reforms responded to the desires of Moroccans to have greater democracy in the country and strengthened the parliamentary system.
The king, however, remained the head of the army and a council making security policy, maintaining much of his power.
Activists from the pro-democracy February 20 movement dismissed many of the changes describing them as cosmetic.
Like the rest of the Middle East, Morocco has been swept by popular protests calling for reform, though not on the scale of many countries in the region.
