Ring leader among 9 terrorists killed in Dera Ismail Khan: ISPR

Dawn.com
April 7, 2025

Security forces killed nine terrorists during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Takwara area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan district, the military’s media wing said on Monday.

Pakistan has witnessed an uptick in terror activities over the past year, especially in KP and Balochistan, after the proscribed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), security personnel carried out the IBO on the night of April 6-7 on the reported presence of khwarij.

Fitna Al Khawarij is a term the state uses to refer to the banned TTP.

The statement said, “During [the] conduct of the operation, [our] own troops effectively engaged the khwarij location and after an intense fire exchange, nine khwarij including HVT (high-value target), kharji ring leader Shireen were sent to hell.”

The forces also recovered weapons and ammunition from the terrorists, it added.

The statement further said that the terrorist leader was wanted by law enforcement agencies “due to his involvement in numerous terrorist activities” and “being involved in target killing of numerous innocent civilians”.

He was also responsible for the martydom of Captain Hasnain Akhtar on March 20, the statement added.

The ISPR said, “Today’s operation has avenged the heinous act and has brought the main perpetrator to justice.”

The statement further read that a “sanitisation operation” was being conducted to eliminate any other terrorists in the area, adding, “[The] security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism from the country.”

A day earlier, security forces killed eight terrorists and injured another four as they thwarted an infiltration attempt on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in North Waziristan.

Last month, the government had ruled out a fresh military operation amid a surge in terrorist attacks, especially in KP and Balochistan.

Militant violence and security operations intensified in the country in March, with the number of militant attacks surpassing 100 for the first time since November 2014, according to data released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (Picss).

In KP, at least 206 people were killed — including 49 security personnel, 34 civilians, and 123 militants — while 115 were injured, with 63 security personnel and 49 civilians among them, the Picss report said.

Video of the intelligence-based operation conducted in Kurram, which was carried out on a confirmed tip-off about the presence of Khawarij. First, the Khawarij hideout was monitored from nearby hills to gauge the number of Khawarij and their surveillance system. As soon as this information was confirmed, the operation was launched and the first sniper targeted the Khawarij on the roof. After that, the soldiers cleared the compound and killed two more Khawarij.

Security forces killed two terrorists, including a “high-value target”, during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the Timergara area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lower Dir, the military’s media wing said on Friday.

Pakistan has witnessed an uptick in terror activities over the past year, especially in KP and Balochistan, after the proscribed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), security personnel carried out the IBO on the night of April 10-11 on the reported presence of khawarij.

Fitna Al Khawarij is a term the state uses to refer to the banned TTP.

The statement said: “During the conduct of operation, [our] own troops surrounded and effectively engaged the khawarij location, and after intense fire exchange, two khawarij including a high value target Kharji Hafeezullah [alias] Kochwan were sent to hell.”

It added that Kharji Hafeezullah was “involved in numerous terrorist activities against the security forces as well as the innocent civilians”.

He was highly wanted by law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and the government had fixed head money of Rs10 million on him, the ISPR said.

The statement further read that a “sanitisation operation” was being conducted to eliminate any other terrorists in the area, adding, “[The] security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism from the country.”

On Monday, security forces killed nine terrorists, including the ring leader, during an IBO in the Takwara area of KP’s Dera Ismail Khan district.

In KP, at least 206 people were killed — including 49 security personnel, 34 civilians, and 123 militants — while 115 were injured, with 63 security personnel and 49 civilians among them, the Picss report said.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the security forces for eliminating the two terrorists.

The president and premier, in their separately issued statements, also appreciated the professional competence of the security forces for carrying out the operation.

“Operations by the security forces will continue till the complete eradication of terrorism. The nation is also firmly resolved to completely eliminate the menace of khawarij,” President Zardari stated.

He said that eliminating the terrorist ringleader during the operation was a major success for the security forces.

In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz said: “We will continue to thwart the evil designs of the enemies of humanity. Our war against terrorism will continue till the scourge is eliminated in total.”

Funeral prayers were offered in Peshawar on Sunday for two police constables, who were martyred during firing on their vehicle.

Funeral prayers were offered in Peshawar on Sunday for two police constables who were martyred during firing on their vehicle, officials said.

The incident took place when armed drug smugglers opened fire on the Excise Intelligence Bureau (EIB) mobile squadron GT Road in the Taro Pabbi area of Nowshera in the early hours of the day, Rescue 1122 Spokesperson Nabeel Khan confirmed to Dawn.com.

As a result, constables Iftikhar and Mujahid were martyred. The vehicle’s driver, Shabbir, also lost his life in the attack. Sub-Inspector Farooq Bacha was injured and has been hospitalised.

Funeral prayers for the martyred personnel were offered with full honours at Police Lines Peshawar on Sunday morning.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said the deceased excise personnel have attained a “high rank of martyrdom”. According to a statement issued by the interior ministry, Naqvi said: “We stand with the grieving families of the martyred personnel.”

Last month, three police officials were martyred in gun attacks in Lower South Waziristan, Hangu and Lakki Marwat districts.

Earlier in March, two policemen were martyred while one security guard lost his life in separate overnight attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Karak and Peshawar districts.

In February, three cops were martyred while another six were injured in an attack on a police checkpost in Karak.

It is extremely regrettable and worrying that the group of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan commander Shafiullah Haider has made several holy mosques in the Mir Ali district of North Waziristan their permanent hideouts and operational centers.

These terrorists exploit the sanctity of the houses of Allah because they know full well that the state of Pakistan and the Pakistani armed forces avoid operations in places of worship out of respect for Islamic values.

But the irony is that these elements themselves do not recognize any sanctity in the houses of Allah. They use mosques not for worship or spiritual solace but for the purposes of planning, hiding, and terrorism — which is completely contrary to the spirit of these holy places.

After their takeover, local worshippers are expelled from their own neighborhood mosques, and these armed men take their place.

Can we accept that the houses of Allah should be held hostage by those who not only violate their sanctity but also deprive others of the right to worship?

And what kind of moral and spiritual decline is it that obscenity, corruption, or impure intentions, whether virtual or real, are tolerated within the four walls of a mosque?
