Kochi: A circular by the Kerala Education department directing the women teachers to wear green blouses while attending a function has triggered a controversy.
Amidst the uproar over the 'dress code' for the teachers, an official of the education department in Ernakulam district has reportedly been placed under suspension.
According to reports, the education department on Monday sent a circular directing the teachers to turn up in the colour-coordinated outfit- an off-white saree with a green blouse, while attending the inaugural of a function connected with the SSA project at Ernakulam.
The move sparked the controversy with some teachers unions alleging political motive behind it. The cause for the row being that the Education ministry is headed by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) member PK Abdu Rabb and the green colour features prominently in the IUML flag.
Following the outrage, the circular, issued by the Ernakulam Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) District Project Officer KM Aliaar, had to be cancelled. The function, scheduled for Tueday was cancelled and the issuing officer was placed under suspension.
The office of the Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb, however, made it clear that the department had no connection with the circular and that it was done to tarnish the image of the minister.
