Kochi: A circular by the Kerala Education department directing the women teachers to wear green blouses while attending a function has triggered a controversy.

Amidst the uproar over the 'dress code' for the teachers, an official of the education department in Ernakulam district has reportedly been placed under suspension.

According to reports, the education department on Monday sent a circular directing the teachers to turn up in the colour-coordinated outfit- an off-white saree with a green blouse, while attending the inaugural of a function connected with the SSA project at Ernakulam.

The move sparked the controversy with some teachers unions alleging political motive behind it. The cause for the row being that the Education ministry is headed by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) member PK Abdu Rabb and the green colour features prominently in the IUML flag.

Following the outrage, the circular, issued by the Ernakulam Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) District Project Officer KM Aliaar, had to be cancelled. The function, scheduled for Tueday was cancelled and the issuing officer was placed under suspension.

The office of the Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb, however, made it clear that the department had no connection with the circular and that it was done to tarnish the image of the minister.

Trouble in God's own country ?

If they want to go green then what is the problem ?

If a group of people due to their majority belief in a particular religion want to practice it exceedingly, that shall not be any problem.

.
we the people of south asia are good at "up roaring" at trivial useless things while ignoring bigger issues which diretly effect us.

This trivial issue can flare up sentiments...Teachers and students should be given a neutral dress code.

No it cannot be forced on by any party... tommorow Hindus will say we want all students and teachers to wear saffron, communist will say we want red., Education in India is not a playground for any religious political party.

What's wrong with the color green?

No probs..Kerala itself is green :)

.
Green is associated with Islam.

Its also related to environment !!
I have seen environmental activist use green colour...
To be honest , a dress code for everyone is not bad... In my coll we have dress code for functions.. None complained...
Maybe its a trivial issue... And its just dirty politics...

If anyone so desires they can do their religion thing in their homes, not in public schools -
on topic - India predominantly identifies with the color blue so a blue uniform scheme would be ideal.

Islam has a color!! Green!!! Srsy!!??

Man, that is news to me! :alcoholic:

In India it is - most of the Islamic country flags in South Asia are green. There is definitely a reference of green to Islam in India.
