Kerala bar owners to start soft drinks and snacks joints soon 
Kerala's Congress-led United Democratic Front government has decided to turn Kerala into a booze-free state. Among other things, beverages outlets will be closed down in phases while 312 bars will have to stop functioning by March 31, 2015.
Soon after the decision was made public yesterday, the government was surprised when Mohan Nair who heads the Drinkers' Delight Association (DDA) issued a statement of intent after meeting the bar owners.
Nair's declaration was precisely phrased. No bar owner wanted to risk the possibility of owning a lot of unfinished stock by running their drinking joints until March 31 next year. Since each one of them orders on a monthly basis, these bars will be closed down by the end of this month itself and the leftovers left outside the houses of chief minister Oomen Chandy and senior UDF leaders.
Teetotalers in the government are shocked. They know that the DDA has lofty ideals such as transforming exam toppers from Alcoholics Anonymous into failures once again, introducing people to different varieties of booze and masterminding discount schemes for focused drunkards. That being the case, why didn't it start a series of solemn post-tragedy marches in Thiruvananthapuram?
Known for his sharp brain, Nair's advice to the perplexed bar owners was simple. He asked them to start Coke, Pepsi and snacks joints which will also have dancing girls. "People must walk in to know that these restaurants supply Coke and Pepsi too. Since our state is culturally rich, many will be attracted because of exquisite dance performances,"Nair explained.
Both Coke and Pepsi which have participated in numerous battles for market share in the past have moved in. After all, each bar owner will now open ten Coke and Pepsi snacks joints with dancing girls. As many as 3120 joints will need supply, whose quantity will exceed the upper limit of the most extravagant estimate.
Queues outside these places during office hours is a guarantee. Youngsters will bunk colleges and stop watching films to watch dancing and consume soft drinks instead. Both Coke and Pepsi are appointing independent CEOs who will be responsible for the growth of their businesses in this tiny state.
Worried that the health of their husbands and boyfriends will be in a mess because of too many dosas, idlis and glasses of soft drinks inside their bellies, women have started protesting in front of the Chief Minister's residence. Everybody except the UDF government seems to know what these joints will serve.
According to our sources, Nair spoke to Anand Patel, a past master who runs a huge liquor racket in Gujarat. After a discussion, Patel who lives in a luxurious landslide-immune mansion inside a Lonavla hill has agreed to start a few boarding schools in Kerala with alcohol-hoarding arrangements.
Eight affluent bar owners will contribute 14 houses each in which these schools will be started next month. The DDDA (Disappeared Drinkers' Delight Association) will organise employees who will teach during school timings and act as delivery supervisors to the joints at night.
Each snacks joint will have a separate 'Rasam and Dosa' section which will serve alcohol. The customers will have to suffer a compromise though. Just in case the joint has a visitor like a militant anti-booze crusader, even a die-hard Scotch drinker will have to mix his 200 ml drink with Coke or Pepsi.
Keeping that possibility in mind, Nair has already circulated an internal memo to the DDDA members and advised them to switch to rum. Ninety percent drinkers have swallowed their saviour's words of wisdom.
Drunkards in Kerala are organising private parties to celebrate the closure of bars. From now on, they can get sloshed during working hours, buy bottles from these joints after flashing their DDDA cards, get back home, and get smashed again.
Many cops and politicians are special invitees, including a few who don't drink. Those who do will live in five star bars soon.
