An army officer from Pakistan's minority Hindu community has made history by becoming the first man from his community to be elevated to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Lt. Col. Dr Kelash Kumar, who belongs to the Tharparkar area in Sindh, joined the Pakistan Army as a captain after graduating with an MBBS from the Liaquat University of Medical Health and Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro.

Lt. Col. Kumar was promoted to the rank of major in 2019.

He has also been awarded the Tamgha-e-Difa, Tamgha-e-Baqa and Tamgha-e-Azam for his services and valour.
He also served in the army operation Al-Meezan in the Waziristan region and was also a part of Operation Raah-e-Nijat in Swat against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

Many took to social media to congratulate the newly-promoted officer on making history, including user Kapil Dev who was among the first to share the news.

Over the past few decades Sindhi's have been joining Pakistan army in increasing numbers.
The Hindu community is largely Sindh based, it's good to see they taking an active approach as well.
My country is theirs as much as anyone else's, actually it's more theirs then mine, since I'm sitting outside lol

I read that historically the rural Sindhi Hindus used to be highly discriminated against by mainstream and upper caste Hindus. I hope their situation is better now.

If you love Pakistan and are willing to die for Pakistan then you are one of us. We don't care about your religion or race.

There is much lesser concept of lower caste or out of caste Dalits in Pakistan, and with no special quotas as they have in India, seems detrimental to them in educational institutes and higher rank jobs...

It's less pronounced and visible in Pakistan, the caste divide, in India it's institutionalized, in Pakistan it's not, in laws and legislations so rich Hindus make the most of it and lower castes suffer.

This resulted in rich caste Hindus obtaining ruling positions by using Dalits as their ladder. While there is little doubt that the rich in majority communities also get most party posts and parliamentary seats, in the Dalit context this has additional ramifications.

For example, the well-educated, upper-caste, Sindhi Hindus get admissions in higher education institutions on merit, and happen to occupy more seats than their proportion in the population. It makes sense for them not to demand quotas.

The absence of a quota, however, is against the interests of Dalits, who have a poor educational profile and seldom get good jobs. Their quota demands cannot make headway as long as their representatives belong to the upper-caste.

In matters of personal laws, the positions of Dalits and caste Hindus diverge on issues as important as divorce. Marriage cannot be dissolved according to the upper-caste code, but this is not so with Dalits. Upper-caste insistence that Hindu marriage law should not include a divorce clause has been a major impediment in its enactment.

At a point in time, among other cities, I also went to school in Karachi many decades ago, and we had Hindus, Parsis and Christians with us but nobody bothered with each other's religion. They were just "classmates" and that is it.

People are surprised now to hear these stories because the media outside of Pakistan paints this image where Muslims are constantly daggers out for non-muslims. It is absolutely not like this. Hindus have flourished in Karachi and urban Sind. Yes, we have discrimination, but some of the very extreme stories that are given air are from the more remote areas and excesses usually are committed by a small community that has been told a narrative which is extremist (case in point is the lynching of the SL factory manager). Most Pakistanis in my view carry on along with each other not bothering however the media outside of Pakistan would have you believe otherwise.
