ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Adm. Mike Mullen asked Pakistan for a guarantee that Pakistan Air Force will not respond to Indian surgical strikes. General Kayani is said to have responded with showing Mullen a photograph of an IAF Mirage-2000 locked by Pakistan Air Forces’ F-16 taken on December 13. ‘Next time, we’ll bring it down’, Mullen was told. To make sure the message was loud and clear, Pakistan Air Force jets started patrolling the skies in hot mode and a red-alert was issued throughout the country. The Indian war rhetoric has failed to impress Pakistan. Instead, the focus is now shifting to Indian intelligence agencies’ failure to put together credible evidence implicating Pakistan in the Mumbai attacks.

India has informed Pakistan that it has not engaged in any sort of troop build-up along the frontier

In response to the ‘deadline’ set by India and the threats from Sonia Gandhi and Pranab Mukherjee, Pakistan had gone on a diplomatic counter-offensive, briefing world powers and countries in the region on the deteriorating relations with India and the steps taken by it to address Indian concerns. Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir met ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council — the US, Britain , China , France and Russia . He also met ambassadors of Italy , Japan , Germany , Saudi Arabia , Iran and Turkey soon after returning from France where he had gone for annual bilateral consultations. However, his most crucial meeting was with Indian High Commissioner Satyabrata Pal at the Foreign Office when he said that India should defuse tension.

Mr Pal was accompanied by his deputy Manpreet Vohra. The Indian side was categorically told that any ‘surgical strikes’ would be considered a declaration of war. India was urged to respond to Pakistan ’s proposal for joint investigation into the Mumbai attacks.

According to sources, the Indian diplomats looked sombre when they came out of the meeting.

As things stand, the possibility of war has been averted for now in which is being seen as a massive diplomatic victory for Pakistan.

This of course does not mean that we should let our guard down. In addition to the diplomatic counter-offensive, it was Pakistan Army’s seriousness that put India on the backfoot.

Once the realization set in that any further attempts to enter Pakistan Airspace will be punished severely by the PAF, the Indians had gone to plan B, with Mullen asking for a guarantee that PAF will not respond to Indian surgical strikes.

General Kiyani is said to have responded with showing Mullen a photograph of an IAF Mirage-2000 locked by Pakistan Air Forces’ F-16 taken on December 13th. ‘Next time, we’ll bring it down’, Mullen was told.

To make sure the message was loud and clear, Pakistan Air Force jets started patrolling the skies in hot mode and a red-alert was issued througout the country.

Failing to get that guarantee, the chance of an Indian strike was reduced significantly. For them it was never about a full war. A few surgical strikes on pre-agreed locations would have been enough to relieve some of the pressure the Indian Government faces domestically. Pakistan Army on the other hand made it clear that any action from India would be taken as a declaration of war, and the response would be swift and decisive.

India faces humiliation now on the diplomatic front having failed to achieve anything from this standoff.

In its attempts to isolate Pakistan by building what it saw as a definitive case, it is India that stands alone on the diplomatic front and is left with begging the Iranians and Chinese to put pressure on Pakistan.

We can now expect an intense and sustained terrorism campaign in Pakistani cities in an attempt to destabilize the country along ethnic / sectarian lines - New Delhi’s time-tested method.

On the diplomatic front India will be lobbying hard to have the ISI (and Pakistan Army) declared as terrorist organisations.

We can also not rule out another false flag attack in the next few weeks.

Pakistan needs to stay united.

Its not over yet.

could you please confirm what aircraft was used by PAF? and who was the pilot that locked mirage?

When we say it we MEAN IT.

They want us to be silent like Arabs ? I am still in shock since i saw 200 people dead on GAZA streets, This is what happens if you remain silent.

Just look at the effects in Wazaristan of our SILENCE, they attack us daily like Israel Does.

Mr Kiyani should be more tough on Pakistani stance that even American Drones MUST Stop Attacking Pakistani areas, Otherwise

"We'll bring it down" you had enough Next times.

Its better to die on your feet than to Live on your Kneels.

BBC reported that an MKI's picture over Pakistan was shown to Mullen with a warning that this will not stand. The aircraft was escorted out of the Pakistani air space by aircraft locking on and giving the intruder a "nudge" to bug out.

It's not really a matter of "threatening" to stop the attacks, it's the matter of those deals made by previous/current govts. to sustain the Americans attacks, while protesting it. This is why you heard Mullen using the same tactics on Pakistan while asking them to allow India to perform surgical attacks and keep quiet (or protest only, not action).

It is being said that the (drone attack) deal was signed until December 2008 and that the constant trips of generals and secretaries of America, visiting Pakistan, to re-sign the deal, but General Kiyani (God bless the man) have been constantly warning the govt. not to.

No wonder Gilani et al. are ocnstantly passing the statements such as: Drone Attacks will be stopped in January, with such conviction that they openly admitted (if one is to read between lines) there was some sort of a deal until Dec-08 that will expire and no more attacks will be carried. Otherwise, why would they (govt) would have stressed on stopping the attakcs in Jan and not just "right now".

So really, its not the problem with the demoralling tantrum of "lack of capability" that ISI DG threw around when he took seat, but the deal that has been made out there.

In either cases, U.S. have a ground base in Tarbela and that's a loss.

That's right. Kiyani originally refused to bow but then Civilian govt. and some unknown reasons pressurized him to allow the so called training facility (base) in Tarbela, where the report said U.S. brought such monster size containers that can only accomodate tanks, large weaponry and other equipment that cannot be justified to use as training the F.C. for anti-insurgency tactics.

Irony is, F.C. doesn't even need anti-insurgency tactics. They are all born guerrila fighters. Those mountains are their dwelling and fighting is in their blood. So this training F.C. was simply a wrapper for the same candy given to the world on the name of WoT.

And as far I have analyzed the news sorrounding the drone attacks, and then heard from some reliable sources about the deal ending in Dec 2008, I am pretty much convinced that it was a deal and apparently its not being re-signed. So hope it wont be re-signed to see the wolves kept on the bay in 2009, else it's really destroying our dignity as a key player in the region.

I hope they wont re-sign it. Anything is possible from from Zardari et al. But their constant statements regarding " no more attacks from Jan" is quiet hopeful.

That I don't know. U.S. bases in the so called Ally countries, are usually permanent until their's a defiance in the new establishment. Tarbela base is first ever ground base for Americans in Pakistan, and they did not come to just leave, you know. I am sure there must be much more than to this.

How many bases overseas will satisfy the appetite of Uncle SAM.

They will be kicked out when time comes, just like those Americans who were kicked out by Ayub khan.

Now, i understand why the bubble of indian agression has been burst. All their bloated claims against Pakistan lie in the dust. hey, why there is no one claiming now to teach Pakistan a lesson??????? you asked for trouble by siding with Israel and US, now when the same Jehadis turn against you, you are running from pillar to post and post to pillar for help. Grow up.... this is all your own making.

Its just from a blog. I don't know how Kiyani is off camera, but his public image looks like he would never disclose what hes "going to do" and just do it...

On the other hand, since Mullens visit, Indians seem to be have been pacified... Kiyani might have disclosed the info knowing Mullens reaction would be to shut the Indians up.
