Kayani invited to Moscow

Russia is interested because it is attracted to Pakistan's strategic location (near Afghanistan, near China, near Iran, near Middle East, near South Asia, hence near American Bases), Shipping Ports (Karachi and Gwadar), future resources (coal, gas, minerals etc...), market of 200 million people.

The U.S-Pakistan relationship has reached at the lowest stage. The more allies Russia makes, the benefit it will gain...

.
Putin also realises that America is attempting to cross the red lines of Pakistan Iran China and Russia. One by one they can do what they want with Nato assistance to these countries.

But a block of these countries could easily be a counterweight to Nato. the interesting thing will be to look at Turkey and India's position to this regional grouping.

Location wise they should join but then they would have to move a way a bit from America

Its time to correct a mistake Pakistan done in the past..
Pakistan fought for Afghanistans freedom against russia...In return we got an ungreatful and hostile Afghanistan and USA 's ocupation of Afghanistan,..
Now pakistan should side with Russia on Afghan issue...

there were NO mistakes in the past

what the Soviets did in Afghanistan was totally wrong. just because it happened in the past doesnt make the Soviets right.
they have played their part in Baloch insurgency and Bangladesh mutiny , toy bombs & Hammer group during the Afghan occupation to say the few.

Gen Zia's cooperation with Saudis and Americans was the right thing. time has moved on and the political outlook is different. Pakistan should NOT join new alliance "AGAINST" someone else.
I would prefer the Indian model, be neutral/ friendly with everyone and do what is best of rht nation.

now look at this and learn and admire the Indians with me.

they sided with Soviets and backed Communist Afghan regime against the Afhgan Mujahideen (including northern Alliance) but now they are loved by Afghans specially northern Alliance

they support Israel but are loved by the Arabs and preferred over Pakistanis
they support Americans but they are free to buy oil from Iran & admired by Iranians
they are getting far more closer to Americans & have the latest tech open to them but not at the expense of the Russians who love them the same as they did before

now thats a kick *** international relations and diplomacy. fried with everyone even if some of them are arch rivals of each other and then get everything which is in national interest.

by the way , this so-called Pak Russian cooperation wont suite the American Arab countries like UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. it will mean a challenge to their ports and commercial hubs. thats why Arabs will love to see Gwadar project failed and area unstable and they will willingly help Americans if they are ever asked to help the BLA terrorists.

remember that the Prophet's saying of Momen not being stung again on the same spot doesnt apply to us.... hehe .. our thinking and reasoning is as high caliber as the politics of PPP and PMlN.

Russia wary of permanent US military bases in Afghanistan

Published: 01 June, 2012, 13:22

Moscow is looking for clarification concerning the mandate of the United States military bases that look set to be a permanent fixture in Afghanistan beyond the announced 2014 pullout date.

"Despite Washington's claims about having no plans to deploy permanent bases in Afghanistan, we know that the US troops will remain in this country after 2014," Nikolaiy Patrushev, Secretary of the Russian Security Council, told reporters on Friday.

Patrushev said Russia is opposed to permanent US military bases in the Central Asian country because such a presence could have undesirable consequences for the entire region.

"The continued long-term foreign military presence in Afghanistan, which could be used (as a springboard) against other countries in the region, is unacceptable to Russia,” he said. “It has yet to be determined what these military bases with an unclear mandate will be doing, if the international stabilization efforts in Afghanistan are due to end by 2015."

While remaining hopeful that the handover of responsibility for Afghan security to local forces will be successful, Patrushev noted that the security situation in Afghanistan remains unpredictable and extremely precarious.

"Already we can see that the national army and police have been unable to provide stability on their own,” he said. “The provinces, where local authorities are now responsible for security, are seeing a rise in influence of the armed opposition."

Meanwhile, the Taliban has launched a so-called "spring offensive" by staging a series of coordinated attacks in Kabul and a number of the country's provinces, Patrushev noted.

"To overcome these negative trends, it is necessary to significantly increase efforts to equip and train the Afghan armed forces so that they could reach such a degree of combat capability that would enable them to counter the threats of terrorism and drug-related crime on their own," the Security Council secretary said.

Aside from the threat of terrorism, Russia is concerned about the production of opium in Afghanistan. Since the collapse of Taliban rule, Russia has witnessed a dramatic surge in the number of heroin addicts and heroin-related deaths.

Meanwhile, the cost of fighting in Afghanistan has also had a heavy toll on US forces. Of the 3,012 Coalition deaths to date, 1,984 have been Americans; of the 22,618 Coalition wounded, 14,793 are American.

According to the US Defense Budget, the estimated cost of deploying one US soldier in Afghanistan is over $1 million dollars per year.

Russia Pakistan China and Iran do not want US interference from America only Indians do lol

Nobody wants permanent US presence in Afghanistan but most civilised countries want NATO to stay till the time ANA is not strong enough to handle Afghanistan security and that includes both Russia and India . That is why Russia provides them the supply routes .

thats a bit silly to say the least. from the article it is clear that Russia does not want Americans to have long term bases in Afghanistan.

The Geopolitics is not as simple kindly put Iran out of that calculus the reason is that Pakistan is more inclined towards Saudi Arabia (GCC) and Turkey and India is more inclined towards USA, Israel & UK axis.

Russians have some opposition to Pak joining SCO - obviously some posturing for the Indians.

If Pakistan gets their approval we are pretty much in the SCO.

After '65 War Ayub was totally disappointed by US treachery. He had also started a process of coming nearer the Soviets beginning with Tashkent. Some people believe Liaqat Ali Khan was assassinated when he had decided to ally with the Soviets. The mystery behind his assassination in RWP (now called Liaqat Bagh) by Akbar Khan was never truly solved. For instance, who/why Akbar was shot dead immediately after he had done the deed?

^^such complicated diplomacy needs internal stability..and unity among people, which we dont have.
We as a nation have obsessive compulsive behaviour,we need a foreign force to get obsessed with...
Never in the history of Pakistan we got obsessed with Pakistan.
So now it will be better to get obsessed with Russia and quit obsession with USA-

Russia calls to speed up India and Pakistan joining SCO

Published: 12 May, 2012, 13:24

In an effort to add some muscle to the regional economic bloc, Russia is looking to expedite India and Pakistan's membership process into the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

*Acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said delaying the decision on the accession of India and Pakistan was "counter-productive." He made his comments while taking part in a meeting of foreign ministers of SCO member states in Beijing on Friday.

"We should take an active part in all international discussions on Afghanistan, coordinating our positions and stressing the SCO's readiness to contribute to efforts by the international community aimed at the political and economic revival of Afghanistan," Lavrov said.

The SCO, which was officially established in 2001, includes Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan presently have observer status, while Afghanistan and Turkmenistan attend SCO meetings as guest nations.
Lavrov said that an international conference on Afghanistan will take place in the Afghan capital of Kabul on June 14.

The acting minister stressed that granting SCO observer status to Afghanistan would help achieve these goals.

China has held the organization's rotating presidency since August 1, 2011.

Maj Gen. Akbar Khan did not kill Liaqat Ali Khan, and did not die immediately after either - he was responsible for a failed coup against Liaqat Ali Khan. He went on to become Chief of National Security under ZAB in the late 70s some 20 years after Liaqat Ali was assassinated.

So pleased to hear that. You are right India is a non starter cos Chinese have not been that positive on Indians joining. Though we get so many coming here and trying to make out the transactional relations of India with Russia and Iran mean it can have the best of both world. Iran I accept the jury is out. They will be in if they cannot have a raprochment with America.

The long term geo strategic situation of China Russia Pakisatn and Cars is settled. I will wait for the rest of you to catch up joining the dots

You need not to be hopeless as Pakistani election system is Parliamentary & it is difficult for a nascent party to get full majority as Pakistan has influential local system of feudal Lords and vadheras.
