Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in a written reply to Shri Ambeth Rajan in Rajya Sabha was informed that dry variant of Kaveri Engine will be developed which will eventually power Indian Unmanned Strike Air Vehicle (IUSAV).

He also informed the house that Kaveri engine was not able to achieve desired thrust. Hence, GE-F404 Engine has been selected as power plant for Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk-I. LCA Mk-II which require a higher thrust class Engine, therefore, GE-F414 Engine has been chosen as power plant for LCA Mk-II. Both engines are imported from M/s General Electric, USA.

IUSAV is a pilotless bomber aircraft that the DRDO is developing. IUSAV will weigh less than 10 tonnes and Kaveri’s 50 KN dry thrust will be adequate for the IUSAV . BAE, Dassault and Saab are currently having discussion with DRDO for possible technology partnership on development of IUSAV. According to experts DRDO plans to field IUSAV by 2020 .

Yes.

But still, Kaveri is being integrated with one of the Tejas prototypes ... for test purposes (Even though, the intentions of these test flights with Tejas is not certify it for eventual use of productoin Tejas).

DRDO chief has also said that the current Kaveri can support as much as 75% of the Tejas' flight envelop ... good enough for an export client, whom USA does not want to sell the GE engines.

How many times will our politicians ask the same redundant questions every month? Instead more pressure should be exerted by them towards combat readiness, safety procedures and projects currently under development (every 3/4 months).

In short, means that all the LCAs will be powered by General Electric, USA. But if it fails then UCAV will again be powered by the same engine.

Also tell me about any plans of US allowing India to buy F-35s like it will allow Japan, Korea and Taiwan to buy it by 2015 when it will reach production.

IT IS BETTER FOR INDIA TO TAKE ASSISTANCE FROM FRANCE OR RUSSIA

Designing an Aero Gas Turbine Engine is not an easy job..it is much more difficult than a cryogenic engine..
Even China is using Russian engines for their indigenous aircrafts.

In UAV matters russia herself is buying from israel and UAE,europe is still busy with new project.Israel is the top dog in UAVs.But we can possibly do this one on our own, given that we have operated israeli drones for long periods.

Another kavari usage thread? No need to salvage the project of Kavari for LCA. Its time to give it another name if its not going to power LCA.

Maybe someone can give a name for Kavari on trains
Kavari on ships
Kavari on choppers.
Kavari on UAV.
Kavari on death star
