Kaveri Engine Project update

The Kaveri engine K9 (around 81kN) does not meet the requirements, not even for LCA MK1, that's why we went with US engines in the prototypes and for the serial produced MK1 long ago. GTRE and MoD now wants the Kaveri - Snecma engine K10 (90 - 100kN), to replace the US engines in LCA during MLU, possibly for further LCA orders and in future for the AMCA.

Kaveri was made for Tejus........Which means the Kaveri Engine has not met its design requirements.......................Nobody attains Success on everything at first try.........we have made ground breaking achievement in the field of composite & avionics during tejus development,,,,,,,,Lets not be admant.lets ask others help in engine and radar side..........learn things and then go for the shot.................

True, but it would have been better if we've had done it from the start and not now, when things went wrong. That's why I don't understand why IAF wants to delay the engine developments even further.

No! the IAF wants LCA to be as indigenous as possible. That is why they are pushing on an indigenous engine...the Ardiden-1H modification to Shakthi has given them a great boost. So if the K 10 is a success it would be a great boost.

What is the difference between K-9 and K-10 Engine other than its core?? The kabini core would be replaced with? any Idea?

Yes and that caused the delays! The Shakti engine was a co-development between Turbomeca (part of the Safran group, just like Snecma) and HAL, not LRDE. HAL had only a small part in it, which is logical, because they didn't had the experience in that time, but choosing LRDE with even less experience for the development of Kaveri was an even bigger mistake than trying such a development alone.

AFAIK the design is still not fixed and that's why it's not clear what parts will be changed, but the core alone is not enough, because it's not only the thrust that should be increased, but also the weight that should be reduced. Last time I saw Kaveri specs, the weight was above 1100Kg, for comparison:

- M88 with 75kN thrust weighs less then 900Kg
- EJ 200 with 90kN hardly 1000
- GE 404 with 85kN thrust weighs 1036Kg
- GE 414 with 98kN thrust weighs 1100Kg
- RD 33MK with 90kN thrust weighs 1145Kg

The Cabinet Committee on Security on Wednesday will consider a revised proposal for purchase of C-17s

Q) how then it is related to kaveri engine ?

A) For $4.1 billion, with upfront offsets of $1.12 billion , outlines the offsets including a High Altitude Engine Test Facility and Trisonic Wind Tunnel Facility valued at $510 million, for the Defence Research & Development Organisation.
India’s access to advanced technology air tunnel would be important as it has depended on Russian test facilities to evaluate the indigenous Kaveri jet engine, which was to be used in the LCA project.

will TVC engine used in ships?

ha... ha..ha

The Kaveri Engine's technologies will be used for various other purposes. There are plans to use kaveri's technologies for making a Gas Turbine Engines for APCs and MBTs.Similarly another version is planned to make a Gas Turbine Engines for ships just like the GE-LM2500 gas turbine engines for naval ships.

LRDE has nothing to do with engines. It makes Radars. Will you stop trolling now?

Hope the news is false. Otherwise i see no improvement or any development without JV.

Kaveri passed initial flight tests without a JV.

So, IAF is right to stand behind home-made design and improving it further. This long-term vision, will pay better. Thanks to GTRE, we have landed in engine-makers league.

.
Well, i dont think at present going at own is good idea. It will delay the AMCA as it happened in the case of LCA. Let the AMCA/LCA-II start flying with JV product. We have all the knowledge of kaveri, and we will gain alot for the proposed JV. All this can be used to develop a highly advanced engine for future jets if we want to have indigenous later on.

Kal kare so aaj kar, aaj kare so abhi. ;)

JV with Snecma will not bring any technology. French have refused to transfer design codes.

Add to that, a mini Kaveri for UCAV.

He mean to say GTRE. (Actually LRDE and GTRE is very close, so he might get confused. I use to work near that area).

Some once post on LCA sticky thread "Sancho is biggest troll on LCA." In fact Sancho still believe that LCA is just a prototype or tech demonstrator. ppl like him believe that LCA must be dropped and AMCA will be given focus. This is what they commented in Sticky LCA thread.

Making Engine is not easy job, and what if it is under power??? Rafael use underpower engine, like wise many fighter plane fly on underpower engine for there first batch.

I think LCA MKII comes with GE414 and some LCA MKII (10-20) come with Kaveri engine too. Unless we test it how can we learn???

http://samantk.com/News/Defence/kaveri-engine-update-tests-to-continue-from-march-2012.html

According to an unconfirmed source, the*GTX-35VS Kaveri Engine's test will start again from March 2012 - the test were suspended last year for other protoypes to be delivered. The source also said that 2/3rd*of all the test have been completed. The engine has completed (or has to complete) 43 flights on board the IL-76 test laboratory as per India's DRDO contract with Gromov Flight Research Institute (GFRI).*
