Begging bowl still intact: Farrukh Qayyum

ONLINE - International News Network

Federal secretary for economic affairs Farrukh Qayyum has said begging bowl could not be broken despite enormous government efforts adding Pakistan would continue to acquire foreign loans unless it achieved self reliance in national resources.

He said this while giving a briefing to National Assembly (NA) standing committee on economic affairs, which met here Wednesday. Chairman Malik Azmat Khan presided over the meeting.

Federal secretary for economic affairs informed "we are not capable of utilizing foreign assistance in effective manner. A special unit in this respect would be set up in the ministry, he pointed out.

Volume of foreign debt against government of Pakistan had swelled to $46 billion till March, 31, 2009. Later loans amounting to $ 7 billion were obtained from IMF, world bank and Asian Development Bank. Uptill March, 31, 2009, foreign loans amounting to $12.14 billion were secured in the denomination of Japanese yen, $11.23 billion in the form of dollars, $9.84 billion in the shape of SDR, $5.28 billion in the form of Euro and $1.96 billion in the form of other currencies.

During the fiscal year, 2007-08 loans to the tune of $1.29 billion were obtained direct from various countries, $1.80 billion from multilateral donors and $.35 billion under short term package , he indicated.

He pointed out $2.52 billion were paid on account of principal amount of loans and $910 million on account of interest till the month of March during he fiscal year 2008-09. Pakistan owed $10..26 billion to Asian Development Bank, $11 billion to world bank and $440 million to other financial institutions till March, 31, 2009.

Responding to a question he told direct assistance was not provided to the government for rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Certain conditionalities had been imposed on assistance to be given under Kerry Logar bill , he added. No deduction could be made in any development project on which this assistance would be spent, he told. This aid would be extended direct to the government, he informed.

I was proud of Pakistan when they stood for other Muslims. But recently after reading about Uighur Movement i lost my faith in Pakistan.

It's not a very clever thing to say that you defeated the USSR.i have read in this forum that it was Pakistan that caused the break-up of the soviet union.Elsewhere I read that PAf pilots defeated Israeli pilots on several occasions.I did try to dig out the truth behind these tall claims but found them to be unfounded claims and nothing more.
While I am aware of Pakistan training the mujahideens and the afghans...that was it.
As far as the afghanistan war with the USSR and the USA is concerned...the definition of a defeat or victory is very ambiguous.USSR attacked afghanistan...captured major cities and stayed there for a long time.they withdrew because it was putting a dentin their economies and they were incurring causalities....and that the USA was pumping in money.History has turned a full circle and USA finds itself in afghanistan...they have captured all the major cities...installed a democratic govt...but still many pakistanis consider it their defeat.

Pakistan keeps getting financial and military aid from the US.Unfortunately pakistan has misused most of the aid in its conspiracies against India. That's the sad part.

Provide any link of misuse ?

History is repeating itself US generals have now only 18 months left for peace in Afghanistan, because US economy could not afford unlimited WAR.

USSR had isolated economy but with US economy all G8 countries linked

After 9/11 US is losing 500 Bill USD @ year , total money lost in eight years is 4 trillion USD but no result.

Total US economy is 10 Trillion dollar , almost 50% they already lost during last eight years , that is major reason of world recession , china ,india and UK are most effected countries because they had heavily invested in US securities.
