What Pakistan wants is irrelevant, what it can get is relevant. What it is getting is an end to bankruptcy inducing arms race with India. What it is getting is relinquishing of Indian claim on G-B and their side of Kashmir. What it is getting is peace to deal with evil within
Sounds pragmatic. And hence very unPakistani. :)

.
My point is convert LoC to IB through mediation as that would involve some saving of face on both sides.

No one talking about changing current Indian Geography

Why do you need Mediation to do that ?
Does one need Mediation to come to terms with the FACTs or the the REALITIES ?
So the idea of any Mediation is a Non-Starter.....

We need to formalize this;LOC is an open wound; as things stand on paper issues are not resolved which gives Pakistan space to create mischief. Once this is done no more Pakistan claim on Indian side of Kashmir; no more drama; we can move on to bigger and better things in terms of dealing with each other.

Do you think that all the nautanki will stop then ? If there is final resolution on Kashmir as you propose, then whole institutions in Pakistan will come crumbling down.
Plus it will render so many chattey-patteys idle..........

That is Pakistan's problem but then again that is the cost for peace, cost for development.

. . . .
So what?
As I said elsewhere...... the key word is ........ affordability.

Sir it is very affordable

Cost of Human Life: 1k in support to family
Cost of Ak 47: Less than 1k
Cost of improvised Explosives: 1k
Cost of GPS: .5k
Sundry Costs: 5k

So for around 9 -10k USD you have a suicide bomber ready to blow a stolen car in crowded plaza.

Good luck dealing with that

Hi

I know loads of Indians would curse me for this thread and quote Shimla Agreement but anyway here is my reasoning: Bilateral process has not got us anywhere because we are too emotional, lot of historical baggage, vested domestic interests etc. We have tried and failed for close to 40 years and as Einstein said trying the same thing and accepting a different result is definition of insanity.

What is the harm in appointing a negotiator - if it does not work we can go back to our old ways. Precedent established can be demolished. Worthlessness of UN resolution has proven that.

Now some Indians will argue, we are comfortable as we are and happy with status - quo. I would say why settle for something good - enough. Yeh Dil Maange More!!

We all can agree Kashmir issue needs to be solved one way or the other. For the skeptics in India here is why:

1. We spend precious resources (human, economic and political) in Kashmir because of threat from Pakistan which can be better utilized for development.

2. Army deployment in Kashmir has created a paradoxical solution - Army is there to kill terrorist but it is deployment of army itself which is making more militants.

3. People of Kashmir are not happy - Period

4. Enmity with Pakistan is denying us the precious short access to Afghanistan and CAR.

5. Huge market of 200 million people is present right in our background with whom we share cultural, lingual, religious and ethnic ties. If our problems are solved we can turn into biggest supplier for Pakistan.

6. Arms race and existential threat of nuclear destruction.

7. Rationale for Pakistan to keep sending terrorist or as they say providing moral support to freedom fighters.

8. Closure for 180 Millions of our own Muslim Citizens

Affordability is a very dynamic thing. Those who get ahead of that equation, then can take anything thrown at them.
One does not need Good Luck, there is no such thing as Good Luck.

I sincerely wish that we stay ahead of the curve, but a 100 successes will not matter if one failure occurs.

but i take your point, no country is immune from that - even in European countries like France we see this menace from lone wolves.

The root cause needs to eliminated which is an impossibility.

Eggjactly..........
Better to beef up the system instead, and most of all work on Economic Growth.
Mao was quite wrong actually...... Power does not flow from the Barrel of a Gun...... Power resides in Bank Vaults.
Which is why his children and grand-children started working differently.
But did they get the "how and why" of it right is another question ?

.
@Spectre may I ask the intent of getting a mediator...

kashmir issue, actually can be resolved amicably in 1000 different ways, the problem there is no sincere intent to do so... A stagnant posture benefits both sides.
