BANGALORE: The Karnataka government is planning to make the Bangalore-Mysore road an eight-lane highway with flyovers to ease traffic congestion at key bottlenecks.
In the recent past, the two-and-a-half-hour smooth drive between these two cities has turned into a three-and-a-half-hour nightmare, with drivers forced to negotiate over 100 illegally erected speedbreakers. The traffic density, according to a recent survey conducted by the public works department, has almost doubled in the past decade with the 130-km stretch recording 40,000 passenger car unit (PCU).
When the four-lane was built in 2004, vehicular traffic was 20,000 PCU. "Traffic volume apart, illegal speedbreakers add to the delay," a senior PWD official told TOI.
The eight-lane highway proposal is likely to be presented to chief minister Siddaramaiah and included in the budget to be presented on February 14.
The proposal to build flyovers in five places on the way to Mysore - Bidadi, Ramanagaram, Maddur, Mandya and Srirangapatna - has remained a mere promise from ministers and netas representing Mandya, Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts. "Flyovers alone won't reduce traffic density. Wide roads coupled with flyovers will definitely help," the official said.
Asked if it'll be a six- or an eight-lane highway, public works minister HC Mahadevappa said the proposal is before the CM, and didn't disclose the details. Some time ago, the minister had spoken of two proposals - upgrading the road into a six-lane one or a national highway.
Six or eight lanes, widening of the road means acquiring huge tracts of land along the highway, which is seeing huge real-estate action in the past decade. But land losers needn't fret. With the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 passed and notified, land owners are likely to get a good amount - four times the market rate - if they have to part with huge chunks of their land.

Superb Win! This team seems to be in red hot form.
Did you watch/follow the IPL auctions bro? Mallya seems to have messed up again. No Vinay and Uttappa in RCB, plus not enough cash at hand to bid for Manish Pandey either.
We need to be back up there... Looks like this team is going to bring glory days back to our state!
Didn't follow in detail.. but i know that he broke the bank for Yuvraj Singh. Personally I'm not quite keen on spending that much amount of money for one player. Maybe he could have brought in a quality bowler instead!
Yeah, and the best part is that many of the big performers this season were also youngsters. If they keep up this form, we're gonna reign at the top for a long time.
Regarding IPL, the RCB batting attack does look very menacing. But the Achilles heel remains the bowling unit, and the big spending on Yuvraj meant that the likes of Jaydev Unadkat, Shami Ahmed, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Balaji(who have very good IPL records) all went to someone else.
K L Rahul and Karun Nair, our young guns this season, might go for reasonably good prices tomorrow.
You never explained why you haz a Nair in your team
And no ross taylor
Karun Nair is OUR BOY! He's an out-&-out Bangalorean.
Ross the Boss will be snapped up today, I'm quite sure of it....may go to Rajastan Royals, as they're the ones who have the largest amount left in their kitty. That @$$ Mallya again got it wrong at the auctions, splurging on Yuvraj when in reality we needed good Indian bowlers and allrounders. And I have no idea why he spent a crore on Murali of all people.
