Kargil Operation: Musharraf kept Kayani in the dark, book reveals

ISLAMABAD: Former federal minister Lt General (retd) Abdul Majeed Malik has disclosed that General Pervez Musharraf kept former army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani in the dark while carrying out the Kargil Operation in 1999.

Malik, in his book Ham Bhi Wahan Mojod Thay, has made startling revelations regarding the Kargil adventure and shared his secrets. He has written that at the time of Kargil Operation, General Kayani was heading 12 Division that was responsible to guard Kashmir.

However, the former military ruler General Musharraf did not keep Kayani in the loop, who later opposed the operation. He said Musharraf was entirely responsible for the operation and he did not even brief the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif about his plans.

He has disclosed that General Musharraf called his chief of general staff from China to seek details of the briefing given to prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Kargil Operation – a briefing that was tapped by Indian intelligence agencies.

It was a grave breach of security to discuss such a sensitive issue on telephone call, Malik wrote. According to him, Nawaz Sharif made a wrong decision when he appointed General Ziauddin Butt as army chief after dismissing General Musharraf.

The book shares how Pakistan conducted atomic tests. Malik has given full credit to Nawaz Sharif, who, according to him, was mentally ready to go for atomic tests despite opposition from certain close cabinet members.

He has written that had Raja Zafarul Haq been picked as acting president of the party instead of Javed Hashmi during Nawaz Sharif’s exile, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz would not have faced splits.

This is old news...we all know what Mushhy was upto in Kargil. Mushy has a history of masterminding many such forlorn attempts (eg Siachen Conflict of 1980's, while he was heading the elite SSG commandos).
Unfortunately during the kargil war, bodies of Pakistani soldiers were not even taken back, albeit they were given a proper burial in India.
No soldier should meet such a fate where his own country disowns him after his supreme sacrifice.

Eleven years after the Kargil war, the Pakistan Army has quietly included the names of 453 soldiers and officers who were killed during the conflict on its website.
The 453 Pakistani soldiers are shown as killed in the Batalik-Kargil sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

I can testify to Kayani's unhappiness over Kargil. He did "know" what was happening but was told to keep out of it. He would routinely mumble about knowing strategic limits to friends during that time.

There is no doubt that this was a bad adventure. But this was not the first one least to say. Starting from Tribal invasion, every major conflict in history has a block box alongside.

Its been many years now,its seems most dint know about it or as you said not happy.
I have a question,is there no accountablity,i mean someone has to pay the price.i am not asking this in a negative way.just wanted to know if there are any counter measures for this not to happen again.

The morale of Pakistan forces after the withdrawal declined as many units of the Northern Light Infantry suffered heavy casualties. The government refused to accept the dead bodies of many officers, an issue that provoked outrage and protests in the Northern Areas. Pakistan initially did not acknowledge many of its casualties, but Sharif later said that over 4,000 Pakistani troops were killed in the operation.

And that was because of Mush's lies that Pakistan had nothing to do with Kargil and that it was the 'Kashmiri Mujahideen' who were fighting against the India Army and thus the reason why they refused to accept the bodies. If they did, the cat would have been out of the bag. But once it became known to the world that it was the Pak army that attacked and not the 'Kashmiri Mujahideen', the PA started accepting the bodies.

Well as i know kayani is a silent soldier,he knows his business very well,those who served under him can testify,but still there are folks out trying to spit on him.Kargil was a tragic failure Indians lost more lives then Pakistan,but still those folks who served at that time say we were not demoralized even our SOS was not responded salute to brave soldiers who paid for foolishness of Generals....
