ISLAMABAD: Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad on Saturday said consultations were going on to take political and administrative steps in order to improve Karachi’s security situation, DawnNews reported.

He further said that “why should we allow the conditions to deteriorate to a point that we have to call in the army?”

Dr Ibad was speaking to media representatives in Islamabad after a meeting with Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Dr Babar Awan.

Moreover, Dr Ibad said that the result of meeting with the senior PPP leader would soon be evident.

Problems between political parties have a negative effect on the country and certain elements use the situation to their advantage, he said, adding that talks between the PPP and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were ongoing.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Awan said his meeting with Dr Ibad took place in a favourable atmosphere.

Dr Awan further said that President Asif Ali Zardari and MQM chief Altaf Hussain had played a significant role to strengthen democracy in Pakistan.

KARACHI: Life stopped for Pakistani cab driver Ghulam Mohammed when his seven-year-old daughter was shot dead on her way home from school, a victim of senseless political and ethnic violence sweeping Karachi.
Shumaila was Mohammed’s only child, born after he and his wife struggled for 12 years to have a baby.
It took two stray bullets to bury all the hopes and dreams they had for the future.
“She was the one who gave meaning to our life. Now we have no reason to live,” said the tearful 36-year-old, a resident of Qasba Colony, one of a series of troubled neighbourhoods in western Karachi turned into a battlefield.
Shumaila was one of 300 people whom the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) says died in political and ethnically linked shootings in Karachi last month and one of the 800 killed since the start of this year.
She was carrying her books when the bullets pierced her abdomen and splintered a rib. Seriously wounded, she was eventually picked up by an ambulance after medics struggled to access the street under gunfire.
“Someone told me my daughter had been shot and I rushed to hospital despite all the risks, only to find her dead in the morgue,” Mohammed said.
Many link the killings to rising tensions between the Mohajirs, the Urdu-speaking majority represented by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), and Pashtun migrants affiliated to the Awami National Party (ANP).
Karachi is Pakistan’s financial capital and, with a population of around 18 million, its largest city.
Helped by its Arabian Sea port, industry in Karachi is thought to account for around a fifth of the country’s GDP.
But authorities appear powerless to stop the bloodshed, human rights activists say, pointing out that most of the victims are innocent civilians.
“People have been killed because of their political affiliations, but it seems most are killed because of their ethnic background,” Zohra Yusuf, chairwoman of the HRCP, told AFP.
“The majority of them are poor and destitute.”
Shumaila was Pashtun. Her father arrived in Karachi from the northwest 20 years ago looking for work and then settled down and got married.
Today the northwest is on the frontline of Taliban and al Qaeda-linked bomb attacks and the migrant flow to Karachi is even greater.
Shumaila’s bereaved parents live on a congested street in a neighbourhood of Urdu and Pashtun speakers, where trigger-happy gunmen from both sides can quickly reduce the area into a battlefield.
HRCP says Karachi suffers political, ethnic and sectarian “polarisation”.
But the government blames vague mafias involved in land grabbing and drug pushing for the killings, and for creating “misunderstandings” among political parties and ethnic hatred.
“It should not be called ethnic violence,” said Sharfuddin Memon, an official in the home ministry of the southern province Sindh, of which Karachi is the capital.
“The mafias are killing people in such a manner that rival communities and parties are left with the impression of an ethnic war which is not there. The mafias do this to get stronger and weaken the writ of the state.”
The Urdu-speaking family of Anwer Ali, 22, say he was walking to work when unknown gunmen shot him dead.
“He was the only bread earner for his mother and two sisters,” said his cousin Mohsin Ali
.The family rent a one-room house in a squatter settlement near the area of Katti Pahari, a flashpoint for the most recent violence, and are deeply frightened about the future.
It is not just shootings. People have seen everything they own go up in smoke, with their houses, buildings and vehicles set alight by arsonists.
Despite the deployment of extra police and paramilitary forces, residents complain that the security personnel do nothing to help.Leaders in the MQM and ANP have blamed each other.
“Mafias are involved in the killings, but armed wings of political parties have played a big role in creating the mess,” said Tauseef Ahmed Khan, who teaches mass communications at Urdu University.
The armed wings work to maintain party influence, prevent rival groups from infiltrating their territories and force people to remain loyal, he said.”There are killings on ethnic grounds while most of the victims are poor people who don’t know the reason why they are being killed,” Khan said.

let's see what MQM fan boys come up with now!!

If they have killed 100s then ask your azaad adlia to hang them. Now dont say that MQM is also blackmailing judiciary. If you cannot prove then keep quiet and stop blaming MQM with predetermined mindset.

MQM got separated for its reservations on AJK elections. PPP tried to force MQM for rejoining, it did not send police and rangers for 4 days and let the gangsters kill 100s lives. In the meantime commisionery system brought back by PPP. When it was unable, then gave seats to MQM, resulting in rejoining of governor. Now commisionery system has been rolled back hence MQM was able to negotiate successfully.

After listening the Haroon Rasheed's comments (who is big hater of MQM than you), i dont know why it is a rocket science that you are unable to understand.

With regard to waderas / jagirdaars, do the aforesaid terms are associated with PPP? NO as every party comprise waderas jagirdaars and MQM is against the system that elects only jagirdaars / waderas.

One cannot isolate itself from the running system. You need to be part of system if you want to change it. Furthermore, the present govt. is elected by people of Pakistan i.e. You.

You can elect the govt but MQM cannot join the same govt for benefits of its own people? hypocrisy????

Try to look at things neutrally, whatever feed you have taken about MQM is given to you by establishment and that relate to era when there was no media.

well the article from news you psoted above your last link clearly says that pathan taxi drivers daughter was shot! who shot her please don't tell me ANP! secondly azaad adliaa cannot do anything against political turf war between ANP,PPP & MQM! currently aadlia passes law no one follows!!! so adaalia is concentrating on giving justice to people waiting for it for 10 10 years!!! finishing their cases!

as for changing system! how can you bring revolution by sitting with corrupt rapists & people you claim "thugs"!! if you want to change you can't maintain the same status-quo and say we are bringing change! to change system you have to change from outside! MQM all it wanted was 2 seats in AJK and nizam system back! now MQM is back sitting with zulfiqar mirza!!!!

does it have any morals?

& you said what the news feed says is a lie because back then there was no media ok i belive you then i can also say there was no operation and killings of MQM workers in 1992 because there was no media!!

neutrally speaking PPP,ANP,PML & MQM are all the same!!! no one is better no one is lesser evil! and definetly none of them is mazloom and masum!

The pathan taxi driver has been killed alongwith his daughter. You ask me not to name 'ANP' responsible for this, Where did I? From your post it seems that you held MQM responsible for this. What is the reason that MQM always comes in your mind for every killing in Karachi? Let us analyze the forces that could be responsible for the killing of that Taxi driver, these may include:

1. MQM (as MQM/ANP clash is well known)
2. ANP (Just to prove MQM guilty)
3. PPP (Taking benefit of rivalry of both the parties)
4. Anyother who doesn't want peace in karachi.

After listening to what haroon rasheed said, point 3 above is most likely to be true. But what makes you every time to held MQM responsible? aren't you unable to digest the facts / reality.

Changing system from outside? like Imran Khan is doing? like JI has been doing since long? dharna / what else? If MQM had boycott elections like IK did, will it be able to restore the Nazim System? what morals are you talking about? They gained what they wanted. Do you want MQM to do what Nawaz sharif is doing? waiting for its turn till then playing role of friendly opposition?

In the absence of media, any blame can be fabricated, but you cannot hide killing of a person. Have you ever visited shohoda qabristan of MQM, have MQM buried statues there? are they financially supporting the ghost families of those killed in 1992?

Regarding your last para... Thank God, at last I heard from your the golden words which I have been saying since the whole Karachi mess was started. No one is saint in Karachi. MQM, PPP, ANP etc. your forgot to mention the Jamatis, they are the same having very strong 'askari wing' in them. For the recent mess / killings PPP is solely responsible along with ANP which has been used by PPP.

Yesterday I attended the Namaz e Janaza of Muntazir Mehdi (Banker) who shot dead yesterday. He was not associated with any of the parties, i.e. MQM / PPP / ANP but still got killed? Bhai behti ganga main sab hath dho rahay hain. He was shia and got killed due to that very reason.
