MQM hits back at Mirza

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Sunday refuted the accusations levelled by former senior provincial minister Zulfiqar Mirza and said that it was part of a conspiracy to create a rift among various nationalities settled in Sindh.

Accusing Mirza of “personally patronising terrorists, target killers (and) kidnappers”, members of MQM’s central coordination committee said that Mirza had been making such statements in a bid to create disharmony.

Saying that Mirza was fuelling ethnic tensions in Sindh, members of the committee said that in so far as Mirza’s allegations against MQM were concerned, they were not new. “Elements who oppose the MQM have been stooping to such tactics to defame the party”.

The committees said that the people were “well aware of these tactics and fake allegations”, adding that none of the allegations against the MQM had ever been proved to be true.

The committees said that in the past, the MQM had even been accused of conspiring against the country to create a ‘Jinnahpur’.
Ironically, the committee said, people who had levelled these allegations had themselves refuted them later on.

It urged Mirza to explain why traders were increasingly targeted for extortion and incidents of kidnapping for ransom increased sharply “soon after he was sworn in as Sindh home minister?”

The committee also asked Dr Mirza to identify extortionists and kidnappers and their backers, besides naming the criminal elements in the “Peoples Amn Committee who killed innocent traders in Sher Shah scrap market why they surrendered to the police, and how many of them were from Dr Mirza’s office.”

The committee also asked Dr Mirza to “tell who had (compelled) eyewitnesses not to recognise the killers” of Sher Shah Market traders and “at whose behest had terrorists of the Peoples Amn Committee kidnapped innocent citizens, took them to torture cells and decapitated them. He should also tell from where the hostages were recovered.”

The committees asked Dr Mirza to tell who was responsible for the “riots in the city with the assistance of drug, land and ammunition mafias”.

The committees said: “In fact, it is Dr Mirza who has personally been patronising terrorists, target killers, kidnappers…and other (criminals)…This is why Dr Mirza could not keep quiet after the law-enforcement agencies launched operation in Lyari against the criminal elements.”
The committees said that Dr Mirza was so inflamed by the operation in Lyari that he even blamed federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik for patronising terrorists.

“However, the fact is that Dr Mirza is directly involved in the bloodshed in the city,” the MQM forum said.
The committees said that MQM has clearly been supporting the ongoing operation against criminal elements.

The committees demanded of President Asif Ali Zardari and the top PPP leadership to take immediate notice of Dr Mirza’s provocative allegations and clarify their positions. Urging the people not to react to Dr Mirza’s “baseless and shameful allegations”, members of the coordination committee urged people to remain peaceful.

^^ MQM should first answer for allegations against them! rather than start blame game! because clearly karachi situation has deteriorated since karachi was taken out of the hands of MQM. MQM loves to destroy karachi when not in power so that people beg for mqm to come back.

& MQM should explain 12th may and torture cells of 90s!

What did ZM say anything new? MQM is used to of these allegation. Its the time for PPP clarify its position. It needs to explain the morchas, torture cell, arms / ammunition recovered from lyari, videos discovered from mobile phones of people got arrested, and phone log of the same mobile phones with the 'influential PPP leaders'.

one answer explain MQMs activities in 90s and 12th may and then PPP and all parties will explain their stand! explain torture cells in 90s found in mqm areas! explain videos of 12th may!

MQM and rehman malik are exposed! and just because bhai can't say anything MQM supporters don't know how to react or what to do! last time they burnt the city and killed 15 people this time scotland yard is interrogating altaf bhai hence all supoorters don't know what to do waiting for phone call before reacting!

Now Ice_man, apart from 'pehly aap' can we agree on one statement? that MQM is not the only one who is responsible for whatever happening in karachi? PPP / ANP are not different from MQM. Every party has militia... Apart from exposing MQM, did you observe other things? As soon as SC took suo moto notice, Rangers did operation and arrested terrorists. So ZM with a fear of getting exposed, came up with bochaar of allegations against MQM. He in his press conference revealed that Arms are coming from KP and land in the Sohrab Goth, whose area ? ANP.... So why he remained silent on ANP?? any good reason do you have?

I am from the very first day shouting that an extensive operation is needed in 'every' disturbed area of Karachi, irrespective whose area is that. The rangers should be given shoot at sight orders, if we really want peace in Karachi.

ANP & PPP have NEVER claimed innocence! the only party that kills and plays mazloom card is MQM hence the hatred against the drama of MQM! and his statement is 100% correct that there were alot of torture cells found in 90s in MQM areas and target killers arrested what happened? 10 years later MQM makes a qabristan of "shaheed" and is playing mazloom!

So, to you the only difference between MQM vs. ANP/PPP is the 'claim' of being mazloom? Am I right? or you are saying that it is Just MQM who is responsible and PPP/ANP are innocent cows?

Ever heard of Liaqat Bangash? Rahman dakait? Lyari Gangwar? Are you aware from where countless hostages have been released in raid? due to which ZM got pissed off?.

As per you, since MQM had torture cells around 21 years back justifies other parties' present torture cells? What a logic. Further, the list of 26 target killers did not include any of PPP / lyari gang war member, Isn't that surprising?

If you are unable to understand my post then nothing can be done. I would again like to emphasize that putting the entire blame on MQM is not justified at all, PPP/ANP are equally responsible for mess we are facing in Karachi.

How do you see this ZM kept quiet till the terrorists got arrested from Lyari? He just had fear of getting exposed, so came up with resignation and that was accepted then and there.

SC should investigate Mirza's accusations: Shahbaz Sharif

241669-shahbazsharif-1314609645-897-640x480.jpg

Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif on Monday demanded the formation of a bench of Supreme Court judges to investigate former Sindh Senior Minister leader Zulfikar Mirza’s accusations.

Sharif said that the Supreme Court should form a commission that will rake notice of Mirza’s accusations against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Interior Minister Rehman Malik.
“If these accusations are true then the criminals should be punished,” he said.
He added that people deserve to know the truth.
Mirza on Sunday lashed out against Rehman Malik – calling him a ‘congenital liar’ and ‘the single biggest threat to Pakistan’s future’ – as well as saying that the MQM was working on an American agenda to break-up the country.
Most parties from across the political spectrum commented on Mirza’s remarks against Malik and the MQM, with many calling upon the Supreme Court to take Mirza up on his offer to submit evidence.
“The timing is perfect since the Supreme Court begins a hearing on the violence in Karachi on Monday (today),” said Senator Tariq Azim of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q). “The nation will soon learn who is telling the truth.”

ANP urges MQM to come clean on Mirza’s remarks

KARACHI: Awami National Party (ANP) on Monday urged MQM's top leadership to come before media and explain their position on Zulfiqar Mirza’s allegations about Altaf Hussain’s anti-Pakhtun remarks.

On Sunday, Mirza alleged that MQM chief Altaf Hussain told him in London that he would not stop killing Pakhtuns.

ANP has demanded that judiciary, executives and security agencies take serious notice of Mirza’s press disclosures.

The meeting took place at Mardan House, in which Zulfiqar Mirza’s allegations against MQM leadership were discussed.

In a statement issued after the meeting, ANP said that the statement given by the former Sindh Home Minister was very serious and grave.

The statement urged the top MQM leadership to give a satisfactory response about the serious allegations.

Despite all the reservations, ANP would give the government time to take the targeted operation to its logical end, it said.

The statement has appealed to people of all ethnic groups to demonstrate patience and tolerance for the cause of peace in Karachi.

No restrictions on Altaf Hussain’s movement: British HC

ISLAMABAD: The British High Commissioner Adam Thomson said Monday that MQM chief Altaf Hussain is a free citizen and no restrictions have been made on his movement, DawnNews reported.

“Reports of Altaf Hussain’s arrest are false whereas Imran Farooq’s murder case investigation will be completed soon,” said Thomson.

Thomson said that the Scotland Yard is proactively investigating Imran Farooq’s murder case and will soon reach a final conclusion.

When inquired about the letter sent to former British Prime Minister Tony Blair by the MQM chief he replied “you should ask Altaf Hussain about it” whereas he said he cannot comment on MQM member Nasreen Jalil’s letter.

“We wish to see Pakistan developing and stable at every step and Britain should not be dragged into Pakistan’s internal affairs but it’s true that the political situation in Pakistan is interesting,” said Thomson.

Separately, the Interior Minister Rehman Malik while speaking to the media said that MQM chief Altaf Hussain is not anti-Pakistan.

Govt report on Karachi violence lacks facts: Supreme Court

KARACHI:
The Supreme Court on Monday expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s report on Karachi violence, saying the report lacked facts that are needed to make headway in the case.
The report was submitted by Attorney General Anwarul Haq during the suo motu hearing of the unrest in Karachi.
The five-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry ordered the Attorney General to file a new report, carrying the latest information about those who are creating unrest in Karachi.
A report without analysis
The five-member bench hearing the Karachi violence suo motu case said it was “unhappy” with the report. It said apart from the first three pages of the report, it was “all newspaper reports and no analysis”.
The court directed Inspector General of Sindh Wajid Ali Durrani to present a comprehensive report on the Karachi killings. The chief justice and bench of members asked Durrani questions that he failed to answer. The court sought the names of police officers who were killed in the line of duty and also those of the arrested target killers. However, Durrani failed to answer these questions.
The AG submitted the report compiled by the Special Branch, FIA, and Intelligence Bureau. The Intelligence Bureau requested the court to keep its report classified.
The court said a decision to keep the report classified will be taken after it has been reviewed. It also remarked that since most of the report is based on newspaper reports, keeping it confidential is not important.
The court also directed the AG to file reports from the ISI and MI.
‘Some Karachi areas are no go zones’
Durrani admitted before the Supreme Court that law-enforcement agencies cannot enter some violence-hit areas of Karachi.
The IG also told the court that ethnic and sectarian tensions are the main reasons for the unrest in Karachi.
He said that extortionists and land grabbers are also adding fuel to the violence in the city.
Durrani said there are several ethnic groups in more than 100 areas of Karachi.
He said 306 people have been killed in Karachi between July 24 and August 24 this year.
He said 232 cases have been registered in 75 police stations during one month. The IG said that despite the ongoing carnage, the situation is within the control of law-enforcement agencies.
Too much security for VIPs
The chief justice told Durrani that Karachi is “in a terrible situation” and that “the city will be out of his hands” if he does not curb the violence immediately.
To this, Durrani responded that he needs one more month to improve security in the city.
The chief justice asked Durrani to give him the number of police officials in Karachi and also the number of police officials designated to VVIPs.
Durrani responded that out of 32,000 police officials, only 20,000 are operational. He said that 12,000 are non-operational out of which 4,000 are protecting SIU and CPO officials and 8,000 are on VVIP duties.
When the chief justice asked him to explain why the VIPs required so much security, the IG expressed ignorance on the matter. He added, however, that the VIPs claim their life is under threat and that they need security.
Senator Babar Awan was present during the court proceedings. Senior PPP leader Raj Haider was also present, but was not summoned by the court.
Sindh government’s counsel Abdul Hafeez Pirzada is defending the police and answered all the questions that the IG failed to answer.
The hearing with resume tomorrow (Tuesday), where Durrani will be expected to bring out names and comply with the court’s requests.
Updated from print edition (below)
SC to hear case on Karachi violence today
A five-member larger bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry will begin hearing the suo motu case on Karachi violence in the metropolis on Monday (today).
Federal and Sindh governments will present a comprehensive report based on input from security agencies before the bench comprising Justice Shakirullah Jan, Justice Nasirul Mulk, Justice Tariq Pervez and Justice Ghulam Rabbani.
The Supreme Court had earlier rejected a report presented by the advocate general Sindh for its failure to identify the groups involved in target killings, abduction and extortion in Karachi.
In view of the sensitivity of the case, heightened security arrangements have been made, involving deployment of 600 police and Rangers personnel at the Supreme Court’s branch registry in Karachi.
According to a statement issued by the Karachi registry, foolproof security arrangements have been ensured on the day of the hearing on Monday and entry into courtroom No 1 will be regulated by passes. Senior Superintendent of Police, South Zone, Naeem Sheikh said police and Rangers have set up check posts on roads leading to the Karachi registry, Shaheen Complex, Polo Ground, Khajoor Chowk and II Chundrigar Road to search people heading towards the court. Suspicious persons will not be allowed to proceed on their way without thorough investigation.
Trained commandos have also been deployed along with additional personnel from police headquarters. Sheikh said he would be present in the court premises at seven in the morning to check police personnel’s performance.

Karachi issue be resolved by politicians: Shujaat

Chaudhry-Shujaat-543.jpg

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League – Quaid (PML-Q) chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Monday said that the issue of Karachi was political and may be resolved by politicians.

Talking to a private news channel, he said that the Army, the Rangers or police or other security forces were unable to tackle it.

He said that the issue of Karachi was a political issue, so it should be resolved in consultation with the chiefs of other political parties, and they should continue the meeting until the solution of this crisis is found.

He said that he was in touch with the PPP leadership for seat-to-seat adjustment.

Answering a question, he said new provinces should be formed on the basis of administrative considerations rather than lingual grounds.

This strategy may prove effective for the consolidation of the motherland, he added.

Malik: it’s emotional outburst

rehman-malik-IM-APP-543.jpg

KARACHI: Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik played down allegations hurled at him by Dr Zulfikar Mirza on Sunday, saying he was like his younger brother and he (Mr Malik) did not mind his remarks which were an emotional outburst.

“I don’t mind this kind of statements,” Mr Malik said.

Despite Mr Malik’s low-key but firm stance, future collaboration between the PPP and MQM appears to have been rocked and some analysts believe the PPP will now be left to itself in the run-up to Senate elections and general elections.

Reacting to Dr Mirza’s tirade, the interior minister said he had been authorised by the party leadership to remain engaged in talks with MQM for the sake of peace in Karachi.

Although the provincial PPP leadership was swift in accepting Mr Mirza’s resignation as senior vice president of the party in the province, who only a few days ago had been assigned by President Zardari to mobilise the party, repeated federal intervention in deciding matters pertaining to law and order in Sindh has generated resentment and cracks within the rank and file of the PPP.

The Sunday’s incident also showed Mr Zardari’s loosening grip on the party leadership in Sindh where the cadre feels that too much has been surrendered to others in the name of reconciliation.

Many PPP activists point out the disconnect between Mr Malik and the Provincial Home Minister Manzoor Wasan who is apparently not being involved in the strategy prepared by Mr Malik about Karachi.

About the crackdown on criminal elements in Karachi, Mr Malik claimed that the operation was across-the-board and without any discrimination, adding that action in Karachi was being carried out only against criminals and enemies of innocent people
and not a single innocent person would be harmed.
