Karachi suffers major electricity breakdown

KARACHI: Vast areas of Karachi plunged into darkness on after several transmission feeders of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) tripped on Saturday night, DawnNews reported.

The breakdown affected Karachi’s Garden, Jacob Lines, Korangi, DHA, Clifton, Lyari, Federal B area, Jehangir Road, Gulshan-i-Jamal, West Wharf, Tariq road and other areas.

According to a KESC spokesperson the suspension of electric supply to Karachi resulted due to the tripping of two 220 KV and three 132 KV transmission lines and 22 of the city’s 64 grid stations had been affected by the suspension.

The spokesman added that KESC staff was busy making repair efforts and so far faults on ten of the affected grid stations had been repaired.

Moreover woes of Karachi’s residents were compounded when one of Dhabeji pumping station’s 72-inch pipelines supplying water to the city burst.

Managing Director of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) said that the pipeline burst due to the frequent electricity outages and as a result scarcity of water is feared in many of the affected areas.

The water board added that water supply would be resumed through an alternate pipeline once electricity is restored.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan taking notice of the electricity and water situation in the city contacted the KESC and KWSB administration directing them to ensure the supply of basic services to the city residents.

It's the second day without power. Water can't be pumped and taps have run dry, all appliances that run on batteries have eventually gone comatose as well. And since windows can't be opened for fear of dengue-fever-carrying mosquitos, theiving garbage-collectors and most of all armed criminals (political parties- and police- sponsored), people are forced to sit in what are practically ovens, doing nothing.

Makes you forget it but al7amdulillaah 3alaa kullii 7aal.

Load shedding happens in specific areas with respect to the production in their nearest power source, Now almost all areas affected to breakdown are recovered. most of them were recovered in less then 8 to 6 hours, some took 12 hours. So we have comparetivly Quick recovering unit from break downs unlike our nieghbours.

Ahem... IMHO isn't @BelligerentPacifist contradicting @K-Xeroid !! Also I remember few very high up in ranks commenting in some thread about what shame it is 4 India not to keep there lights on and how their superior grid performs. Would they pls care to comment ?

Folks I am not trolling I am just saying we both are developing and the sadist approach we take on else pit falls is not taking us anywhere. Trying to understand ones mistake is the first step towards development.

I was talking about what K-Xeroid called Tariq Road. No news of recovery from there. It's usually the last to recover, since it's a second-tier neighbourhood, not too many heavyweights living there to pull the strings, and not the stone-pelting and road-blockading public that gets things done in some of the other areas.

I almost felt we wanted to compete with the recent Indian power breakdown! I'm rooting for us to lose for my family's sake!

...well for things to come to a standstill, you must have things in the first place. Your railways stands still anyways, power or no power!!!

Last I checked, AK-47's and suicide jackets didn't need electricity.

In fact, now that you officially (as per your own govt.) have the technology to power devices on water, you won't be needing electricity anyways.
