Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry restored as Chief Justice of Pakistan

After Iftikhar Chaudry takes over as Chief Justice of Pakistan, A lot of things would clear out why Zardari didn't want him to be restored. It's only a matter of time.

Ithink they migh request him to not open up another Pandora's box and leave NRO alone. Whether he will listen is another thing. Ithink he should ensure that a new impartial CJ is instated and resign as he has been politicized. However, knowing Pakistan it remains wishful thinking. By the way I am on record as a supporter of CJP

I feel that we've reached a crucial and decisive stage in our countries future, I think that this is the moment that our current leaders/politicians should now show that they are true leaders and that they are capable of runnind and ruling our country.
CJ Iftikhar Chaudry should do his very best to gain trust, confidence among all of Pakistan, he should give fellow Pakistanis confidence in the judiciary system.
So much going on right now, I got my fingers crossed, i'm hoping that all that comes out of this will be positive, I hope senses will prevail and that people will think of Pakistan's future instead of taking revenge or gaining brownie points among the public!

What BS has this country turned into.. so basically a lesser evil replacing a more evil person.
now i wonder if pak new justice system (doo numberi adliya) will be able to give justice to those who are getting bombed by US drones. will the new judicury be able to stop drone attacks like their party "PMLN" claims. will they have the guts to charge cases aganist the hands that just fed them if convicted.... will the deposed judges confess to the awam for working under a dictator for 6 years and legitimized his rule until 2007.

I only support this movement only because they will tear PPP another one and zardari will be no more..
Don't buy into this Altaf Hussein propaganda that this is a PML-N movement. No sir, no way. This was a movement for Justice and Nawaz only supported it.

This is not about the CJ being a lesser evil person than dogar. He is just a symbol of this movement. Now every judge would know that this nation will not accept judges that are subservient to dictators both military and civilian.

You are absolutely right here. That indeed is the message. People have seen that IF they want, they CAN turn the tide. I guess people are really fedup now and they want to see a change. It wont be wise to expect an immediate change, however, this development will have a profound effect in the long term. At any rate, Zardari/Naik/Taseer/Malik gang is greatly weakened, and people of Pakistan as well as our Armed Forces (though in the background) have reminded them their actual position.

At this point, PML(N) and PPP should seriously consider the proposal of Ch. Shujaat. That all the respective parties should be given representation in the Punjab Government according to their mendate. This indeed is a wise suggestion and should be taken seriously. Circumstances have given Punjab a unique opportunity to lead this country and Punjab should avail this.

CJ IC is a politicized judge, PMLN are his masters.

i myself am supporter of "FREE INDEPENDENT JUDICERY" but defiantly not these idiots who have tricked awam once again like the 90s politicians.

CJ will avoid political confrontation, his biggest test will be Nawaz and co cases. He will never talk about NRO, this make his position more controversial, because challenging NRO means disturbing political stability, which was recently stabalize by Army and PPP.

Justice Chaudhry’s house draws large crowds

ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Enclave residence of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was a festive site early on Monday, as lawyers, political activists and civil society representatives gathered there in large numbers to felicitate Chaudhry on his anticipated reinstatement.

“By announcing Chaudhry’s return, the premier has dispensed justice to us. He first announced an end to Chaudhry’s house arrest and has now broken the news of his reinstatement. All hats off to him,” said Imran, a political worker. The dozens who thronged Chaudhry’s residence echoed his feelings.

Initially, the crowd was denied entry to the house, but the security deployed at the house eventually allowed them entrance through walkthrough gates. Later, as the strength of the revelers increased, police increased the deployment of personnel to ensure security. However, while the police were armed with both batons and guns, they acted only as spectators, allowing the crowd to celebrate their ‘moment’ as they wished. staff report

Punjab has alway lead the country because they are half of the vote bank ... All govts have been brought into power by Punjab ... by your current opp means a Punjabi speaking leadership then that will be fine but as long as they are able to deliver ... I don't see NS as a national leader, nor is Ch. Iftikhar ... problem is that Punjab is not able to deliver quality leadership ... first BB, then NS, then BB, then NS, then Musharraf and finally 'Z'.

There is no consistency and emotions are high. Musharraf was doing better than his predecessors but Punjab was not happy, which resulted in Zardari's eleection to the Presidency. My fear is that next President may be NS. Problem with NS is that he couldn't win a single NA seat outside of Punjab!

Now you are talking of bringing every one into the govt. So what was wrong with Q-league in the first place??

I hope that he is able to fix the judiciary or at least guide it into the right direction.

Freedom of judiciary and three sons of Balochistan

Wednesday, March 18, 2009
By Rahimullah Yusufzai

PESHAWAR: Though population-wise Balochistan is the smallest province of Pakistan but its contribution in the successful movement for independence of the judiciary was the most significant if one were to consider the crucial roles played by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmud and Ali Ahmed Kurd.

All three belong to Balochistan which, in terms of area, is the largest province of Pakistan and also the country’s future economic lifeline on account of its vast natural resources. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry set the ball rolling by saying “no” to the military ruler, Gen Pervez Musharraf, who summoned him to his presidential camp office in Rawalpindi to force him to resign. His defiance triggered a countrywide agitation by lawyers and caught the imagination of the media, political workers and civil society activists. He stayed on course and refused to compromise even when most of his brother judges abandoned him and preferred to seek back their prized judicial jobs.

Iftikhar Chaudhry has set a record of sorts by twice getting reinstated as the Chief Justice of Pakistan. This became possible due to his determination and that of his innumerable supporters belonging to every walk of life. He became a symbol of the struggle for independence of the judiciary and the rule of law. The slogan, “Chief teray janisar, beshumar, beshumar!” was coined for him and it represented the love and respect for the rightful chief justice of the Supreme Court.

Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmud, another native of Balochistan, was among the pioneers of the struggle for an independent judiciary in the country in recent years. It was in 2002 that he resigned as a judge after refusing to conduct the controversial presidential referendum held by Gen Musharraf to seek election as president in uniform. Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmud was the top judge of Balochistan but he preferred principles and upheld the law and the Constitution instead of succumbing to pressure and validating the fraudulent referendum.

His sacrifice earned him the admiration of the lawyers, who elected him the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmud was member of the legal team that defended Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry when he was deposed by Gen Musharraf and a reference was filed against him in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. After the imposition of the Emergency Rule, Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmud was arrested along with Munir A Malik, Aitzaz Ahsan, Ali Ahmed Kurd and other leaders of the lawyers’ movement. Despite his illness, he was made to sleep on the cold floor of his cell at the Sahiwal jail. When his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to a hospital in Lahore.

The third son of Balochistan who played a pivotal role in the lawyers’ movement was Ali Ahmed Kurd. His fiery speeches inspired the lawyers and all those who wanted the movement to succeed. Despite his small physique, he stood tall and defiant at every step of the lawyers’ movement.

When he subsequently won election as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, it was the culmination of his life-long struggle for justice, democracy and human rights. Luck also favoured him, as it was during his stewardship that the lawyers’ community achieved its goal of getting the deposed judges reinstated.

Celebrations continue in interior Sindh

Wednesday, March 18, 2009
By Adeel Pathan

HYDERABAD: The celebrations to mark the reinstatement of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry continued on Tuesday in interior Sindh, even in small towns.

Political parties as well as civil society organisations and lawyers continued to hold functions and take out rallies in this regard. The reinstatement has boosted the morale of the ordinary citizens.

The freed peasants who are living in various camps in the suburbs of Hyderabad are particularly happy that the chief justice has finally been reinstated. ìI received a call from a freed peasant at 7:am in the morning of March 16, who felicitated me on the reinstatement of Chief Justice Iftikhar,î said chairperson of the Centre for Peopleís Empowerment and Equality (CPEE) Nasreen Shakeel Pathan.

She said the call of a freed peasant early in the morning proved that ordinary citizens and downtrodden people have been worried for the past two years about the judicial crisis in the country and they are happy that the chief justice has finally been reinstated.

Their happiness is owing to the fact that the chief justice took suo moto notice of their grievances, including those of bonded labour, especially the case of the kidnapping of the family members of Mannu Bheel. Labour Party Pakistan activists staged a demonstration outside the Hyderabad press club lauding the decision to reinstate the deposed judges and hoped that now the people would get speedy and inexpensive justice.

Office-bearers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf addressed a news conference at the local press club supporting the decision and recalling the struggle of their party chief Imran Khan in this regard. MMA Sindh President Asadullah Bhutto also addressed a press conference on the same topic to share his views on the restoration of the deposed judges.

Well I never said so you are, but this is the propaganda he is spewing around.

Just to refute your's and Altaf's claims, this movement had people of all races, several parties, and most importantly the lawyers and civil society.

1. Munir Malik is a Sindhi
2. Ali Ahmed Kurd is a Balochi
3. Imran Kha, Qazi Hussein are Pathans.

You like it or not the truth is the whole of Pakistan was standing at the doorsteps of Islamabad demanding only one thing. Justice.

wait.. :lol::lol::lol::lol::rofl::rofl:

CJ IC is a politicized judge, PMLN are his masters.

C'mon, which PML-N rally has the CJ attended? He has made very few public speeches since 9th March 2007 and ALL... I repeat ALL were where the audience were Lawyers. He spoke only at Bar Associations. Even after being restored he only came out, waved at people, went away without saying a word. he has maintained a complete media black out.

Actions speak louder than words. Both his actions and words do not point to this claim of yours that he is a PML-N judge.

He served under a military dictator and that was wrong. That time's climate was different and todays was different. 10 years ago try doing something like a long march, it would never happen.

i myself am supporter of "FREE INDEPENDENT JUDICERY" but defiantly not these idiots who have tricked awam once again like the 90s politicians.
If they have tricked awaam even I won't support them. But until that's proven, "All I'm saying, lets give peace a chance".

.
i dont get one thing. ppl say that he took oath from a dictator. ok thats fine. i agree its wrong. but then the same guy said no to the very same dictator while opening many cases which gov never wanted him to. so if God willing someone comes back to the right path y do we ppl not appreciate him instead of pointing fingures to his past which he has left. learn to appreciate.
