This was July 5, 1962, Algeria celebrated its independence
On 3 July, France officially recognizes the independence of Algeria. Thousands of Algerians marched through the streets of the country. But it is the 5th that will be adopted to celebrate this major event in the Algerian history.
Officially, the independence of Algeria was declared on 3 July 1962 following the referendum which was consecrated on 1 st as part of the "Evian Accords" of March 18, 1962. But the following year, Benbella government registered the day of July 5 for the symbolic it assumes, since the Dey of Algiers had surrendered to French that day, 132 years ago.
Algerian in all age groups, from 3 out into the streets to express their joy of being free at last. Dan trucks piled on the roofs of buses and cars, there are thousands chanting "Tahya Djazaïr" Long live Algeria! The reason ululating everywhere and the green and white flag flanked by crescent and the star floats above the crowd, in every hand. This is the best day for the nation: the end of a long colonial night, the beginning of a beautiful free and prosperous life. This is at least what qu'espèrent all Algerians, happy to become human beings in their own right, in their own country.
