This was July 5, 1962, Algeria celebrated its independence

On 3 July, France officially recognizes the independence of Algeria. Thousands of Algerians marched through the streets of the country. But it is the 5th that will be adopted to celebrate this major event in the Algerian history.

Officially, the independence of Algeria was declared on 3 July 1962 following the referendum which was consecrated on 1 st as part of the "Evian Accords" of March 18, 1962. But the following year, Benbella government registered the day of July 5 for the symbolic it assumes, since the Dey of Algiers had surrendered to French that day, 132 years ago.
Algerian in all age groups, from 3 out into the streets to express their joy of being free at last. Dan trucks piled on the roofs of buses and cars, there are thousands chanting "Tahya Djazaïr" Long live Algeria! The reason ululating everywhere and the green and white flag flanked by crescent and the star floats above the crowd, in every hand. This is the best day for the nation: the end of a long colonial night, the beginning of a beautiful free and prosperous life. This is at least what qu'espèrent all Algerians, happy to become human beings in their own right, in their own country.

"It was a huge party, loud, wonderful, heart-rending, otherworldly. Highs in the city to the sea, the ululating vrillaient heaven. It was the new moon, as in July 1830 when the troops of General Bourmont had entered Algiers. For us who were leaving, it was the mourning moon. "(Jules Roy) *

This celebration, today's young people can imagine through the shows dedicated to football victories.According to many seventies, the mood is the same and this communicative and contagious joy related to football reminds them of these beautiful days of July 1962 where happiness knew no bounds.

This immense jubilation continues several days. On July 5, while newspapers and radio call to return to work and to the "construction" of the country, Algerians do not yet seem sated their newly acquired freedom. The calm return only gradually the days.

In their excitement, Algerians do not know that a tragedy is preparing to Oran. They do not know that the power struggle has already begun in the staffs of the revolution. The summer of 1962 will be even violent in high places. At the point where the Algerians returned to the streets, but this time to say stop to discord clans confront. "Sebaa Snine Barakat! "" Seven years is enough! ".

Today, 52 years after independence, one custody early July 1962 beautiful photographs and even filmed images emotionally charged. Thousands of laughter and smiles were so frozen for posterity so that future generations can capture this incredible feeling of intoxication that comes with the purchase of the right. This joy to know that this beautiful country would now belong to the "natives".For today's young people can understand that freedom is hard and has a price and taste ...

The fracture between the legalists and the putchists. in August 1962.. Youcef Ben khedda, a prominent figure of the GPRA. The provisional government of the Algerian republic set up in Egypt in 1958.
Benyoussef Ben Khedda, an Algerian nationalist leader who announced his country's negotiated independence from France on July 3, 1962, but was quickly swept from power by the revolutionary forces he had helped unleash, died on Feb. 4 at his home in Algiers. He was 82.

Mr. Ben Khedda first attracted international attention in August 1961 when he seized control of the Algerian provisional government in Tunis , from Ferhat Abbas, an early independence movement leader.

His leadership was greeted with dismay in Paris, where his frequent trips to Communist China and behind the Iron Curtain had left him branded as a leftist. But Mr. Abbas, a 62-year-old, middle-class Francophile, had made three unsuccessful attempts to negotiate a settlement with France, and the more radical Mr. Ben Khedda was seen as a more effective leader.

Mr. Ben Khedda resumed secret negotiations with Paris in October 1961, and the next year he agreed to the Evian Accords, which provided for a referendum on Algeria's independence.

But Mr. Ben Khedda's triumph was short-lived. His own position as head of the centrist faction dominating the provisional government was weakened in March, when France released five more radical members whom it had captured, including Ahmed Ben Bella.

Doctrinal differences quickly emerged, with Mr. Ben Bella calling in May for a foreign policy based on neutrality and anticolonialism.

While most of the provisional government returned to Algiers at independence, Mr. Ben Bella went to Morocco, where he joined up with a former head of the Algerian revolutionary army, Col. Houari Boumediene, whom Mr. Ben Khedda had dismissed in an attempt to assert his authority over the armed forces.

The two entered Algeria and established a rival power center at Tlemcen, leaving Mr. Ben Khedda isolated in Algiers, protected only by the city's local forces.

Algerian flag

History , Algerian nationalism (1900-1954)

On May 16, 1926 birth of the North African Star located at 49, rue de Bretagne - Paris.

The NAS is an association founded in France by a core of migrant workers mainly from Algeria, which later became a political party.

Here is some background information about the ENA, which was initiated by the appointment of a working group, whose mission is the realization of the Algerian flag.

Key members of the ENA:

Messali Hajj (which includes the body 1927), Abdelkader Hadj-Ali, Mohamed Said If Djillali, Djillali chabila, Akli Bennoune Mohamed Marouf, Far Kaddour, Sadoun, Sebti Abdelkader Ait-Outouder, Ifour Mohamed Salah Ghandi, Rezki, Boutouil.

On 28 May 1933, was held the General Assembly of the North African Star in which were taken the measures to adopt:

1. the total independence of Algeria

2. total withdrawal of colonial troops

3. formation of a national army.

Composition of the National Provisional Government:

1. Constituent Assembly elected by universal suffrage

2. universal suffrage at all levels, and any local assembly

3. official language: Arabic

4. rebate in full ownership to the mining Algerian state railway, public ports and services appropriated by the conquerors.

Green, white, red!

It is under this program that the political direction of the North African Star had entrusted the task to a working group, the mission to reflect and choose consequences, the country's symbol

The working meeting was held in 1934 in a militant named BENACHNOU Hocine, and living in the 20 tharrondissement; choose a symbol to realize the aspiration of independence. To this end, the Etoile Nord Africaine had to adopt an emblem not a party flag; who was to represent the symbol of independent Algeria.

The same year saw the development of a national emblem of the confederal state of North Africa, even closer links between the three peoples.

After the work, the working group, arrested three colors: green, white and red, symbolizing the Maghreb:

- Green: Tunis El-Khadraa

- White: El-Djazair el-Beida

- Red: Marrakech El-Hamra

In their midst, a crescent and a star can recall a religious background (Islam) in its most complete tolerance, green symbolizing youth and vigor white, freedom, peace and purity and the red price to pay in blood donation, if need requires.

The flag made its first appearance, arranged as follows: a horizontal band of green color above another horizontal band with white amid a crescent and a star in red, facing upwards. This was followed by other shapes, and patterns of flowering.

In any event, this flag made its public debut at the event April 16, 1934 in Algiers, particularly to senior Casbah. Following the event, an airtight closure of the Medina followed by fierce repression arose in this way to find this flag.

Later, we will see this flag in the camp of the forest of Lala Seti Tlemcen held from 22 to 26 July 1944, and sing or even for the first time by the scouts frames (450), the patriotic song " Min Djibalina '(top of our mountains), written by Morchid ADM El-Eulma namely Abdelhafid Belkired.

In the month of April 1945, the PPA (Algerian People's Party, created by Messali El Hadj, following the dissolution of the ENA in 1937) decided to put an end to this anarchy shapes flag. To do this, the task was entrusted to a new working group, consisting of:

- Chawki Mostefai, Hocine Asselah and Chadli El-Mekki

They finally opted for the current flag, which made its first appearance "official" 8 May 1945 in Setif.

The Scout Saal Bouzid was the flag bearer and the first martyr of this standard.

The flag will appear on several other occasions:

- At the harvest in France Janboree the month of August 1947

- Congress of WFDY in Prague in July 1947

- A served Hocine Asselah coffin of public coverage in January 1948

- World Jamboree in 1952 in Canada

- Jamboree Syria 1 st Arab games etc ... and finally in toues the battles of the Revolution 54-62.

The e flag was sung and glorified even to the supreme sacrifice, and illustrated the consecration of the flag, singing one else to mention:

على قدم حيوا العالم رمز البلاد, رمز البلاد ربي حميه في سلمه و في الجهاد و في الجهاد
