Dhaka, Jan 9 (bdnews24.com) A Jahangirnagar University student died early on Monday following a beating allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists.
Police have arrested a member of BCL, ruling Awami League's student wing, over the incident.
Jubair Ahmed, an honours final year student of English Department, died at the United Hospital in the city at 5am.
The hospital's emergency ward physician Dr Samira told bdnews24.com that the death occurred because he bled excessively.
"We gave him 10 bags of blood in the night. It didn't work," she said.
Witnesses said Jubair, a resident student of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, had gone to the campus to take part in honours final examination on Sunday.
BCL JU unit activists had called him to Shahid Rafiq-Jabbar Hall and beat him up in the evening, they said.
He was taken to Savar's Enam Medical College Hospital with severe injuries.
Doctor 'Sohel' told bdnews24.com that he had been wounded by sharp weapons and his two legs and right hand had been broken.
"He was bleeding too much," he had said.
Jubair was shifted to the United Hospital when his condition deteriorated.
Savar police chief Asaduzzaman said they arrested Ashiqur Rahman, a 37th batch student of zoology, from Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall around 8am.
"Additional police have been deployed on the campus," he said.
Sheikh Mohammad Sharif, a leader of a BCL faction that is believed to be of vice chancellor's followers, said, "I've heard the matter. But I can't say who are involved with this."
A BCL member, requesting anonymity, told bdnews24.com that Jubair was a follower of Rashedul Islam Shafin, former president of JU BCL unit.
Jubair left politics after Shafin was expelled from the organisation nearly a year ago, he said.
"He used to attend classes and examinations from Dhaka," he added.
The BCL activist said there had been a dispute between Shafin and the 'VC Group', led by Sharif and S M Shamim.
