Joint exercises with Saudi Arabia begin tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani and Saudi special forces will begin 12-day counter-terrorism exercises on Monday.

The exercises, codenamed Al-Shahab I, will be held at the National Counter-terrorism Training Centre (NCTC), near Kharian.

A contingent of 57 Saudi personnel arrived here on Saturday to take part in the exercises which would conclude on Oct 31.

This is the first time that the two countries are holding joint counter-terrorism exercises. But they have in the past participated in joint military war games, called Al-Samsam.

It is also for the first time that troops of a foreign country will be taking part in a drill at the newly established NCTC.

The army describes NCTC as a modern facility “with large capacity to impart quality training to troops for combating terrorism in all kinds of terrain” and says it caters to local requirements as well as training requests of friendly armies.

The joint counter-terrorism drill, which would be observed by senior officers from both the sides, provides an insight into the defence cooperation between the two countries.

Saudi Arabia has been facing a severe terrorist threat at home from groups like Al Qaeda and the self-styled Islamic State.

A contingent of fifty-seven Saudi personnel has arrived Pakistan to take part in the exercises.
This is for the first time that the two countries are holding joint counter-terrorism exercises.
Meanwhile, joint air exercises between Pakistan and Turkish air forces have been concluded at an operational air base of Pakistan Air Force.
According to a PAF spokesperson, the Turkish air force contingent comprising five F-16s, combat pilots and ground technical crew participated in the 13 days exercises. The aim of these exercises was to boost Pak fighting ability and strengthen its power.

Pabbi houses SSG that is famously called as "Cherat" as you might be aware of. There is no place as Pabi near Kharian. Moreover, this center trains regular infantarians as opposed to Cherat that is SSG exclusive!)

Pabi (Pabbi) is a small town some 30 Kms from Peshawar. Pabbi has a place called Cherat that is the SSG headquarters. The current news wrongly mentions this training to be taking place near pabi Kharian. There is no place called Pabi near Kharian

Sir from our side the things were always normal and beyond. It was the Saudi government which threw a hissyfit over Yemen and now they've come back to their senses.

The SSG training center is at Cherat which is my village. Pabbi is far from Cherat and beside that Cherat is mountainous area and on height while pabbi is pretty plain. All this area officially comes under Nawshera district , NA 5 .

Nop you are mistaken pabbi srounding jungles around kharian and area which almost go to jehlum , by locals are known as pabbi too , loads of exercises happen in this and is directly contacted to cantt in kharian have been to those places and seen them 1st hand few timeswhen ever i go to pakistan years and its also good area for hunting too

Oh right! Thank you for informing. I thought the news wrongly quoted Pabbi (Nowshera District) 30 KMs from Peshawar

Agreed! Yes, the main GT road turns left (if you are going towards Peshawar from Nowshera) at the town called Pabbi while going to Cherat. Those who are not locals of the area loosely use the word Pabbi (or near Pabbi) for explaining the whereabouts of Cherat since it is off the main GT road. Though you geographically nailed the location and differentiation between the 2. Thanks.
