Is Urdu the official language of all Pakistani government functions? I thought that Pakistan was a multi-lingual society that was unified by use of English as the "second" language of most professional people? Is this wrong? Do all government ministers and bureaucrats have to be proficient in Urdu?

.
The official language of Armed forces is English so as all verbal and written correspondence …In airforce academy, while one is doing Bachelors degree, there are no subjects in urdu ….There were few Pakistani origin cadets in academy who came from UK, USA etc, they not only did quite well in academy but later in their carriers too after getting commission….So I don’t think it will an issue ….But I will suggest if you can make some effort and might try to learn the language by reading Urdu newspapers on the net etc …Because if you are planning to live in the Pakistan, Urdu will come handy at various places….

Here is link to the post posted by Champ regarding ISSB…I think it answers many questions….

http://www.defence.pk/forums/defence-industry-technology/18994-issb-test-guide.html

As far as I remember correctly, during ISSB all written tests and oral communication is also in English…someone please correct me if I am wrong..

Just be your self , don’t try to act smart , don’t try to cheat or beat the system, be original and honest, show team spirit as well as leadership qualities and treat everyone there with respect…you should inshallah sail thru the ISSB….

Best of luck….

Best of luck to you K_B, I hope you make it and get a great function in the PA.
Keep your pride high and your chin up, serve your country well brother.
How do you feel by the way about the decision to join the armed forces?
Also a small question, what exactly does an officer do? What kind of positions are there in the Pakistani armed forces? Is there a thread or any writings about it? I'd love to know, thanks, (sorry not intending to hijack the thread).

.
Thanks for the information K_B!
It seems like it is a very difficult and hard process and you'll have stiff competition from others too who want to succeed.
Inshallah you'll make it.
I know for people living especially in the west, it is rather a hard decision due to the fact that you're so far away from home, alot of family and friends are abroad too etc, you're used to a luxurious life without too much changes in your lifestyle, as you said, a safe lifestyle indeed.
Going from this to the army is a huge step to be honest, and I have nothing but my upmost respect for you and everyone else who's willing to go through all the hard tasks and who sacrifices certain things in order to protect and help their nation in any way they can because of the passion and love they have for their countrymen/women, their religion and traditions.
I sincerely hope you'll make it, discipline is the key, an asset us Pakistanis living abroad often miss or do not have and the people having a tougher and harder life compared to us in e.g. Pakistan do have.
I too have my dreams of one day joining the armed forces, I have a huge passion for the army and the strategy and planning that comes with it aswell as the brother/sister hood and teamwork that flows out of it.
I hope my parents and family will not make a big deal out of it, my father rather sees me run a company and earn hard cash and stuff, but we'll see.
I believe you're gonna love the experience K_B, the study and first few steps will be difficult and sometimes you're not gonna like certain things, but when you're done with it, people will look up to you and pay their respects, as people serving the army in whatever position or function, deserve the highest amount of tribute.
Defending your country in any way or form, is the most beautiful and greatest task I can think of, and you should be immensely proud of wearing that uniform.

Respected members I have a few questions. Is the ISSB test given in Urdu or is there an option for English as well? Will I have to have a deep understanding of Urdu to have a chance at passing or can English get you through the preliminary stages of selection? After all these years of living away from Pakistan, my written and reading comprehension of Urdu has gravitated back towards very elementary levels. I can speak and communicate the language perfectly fine, but I am out of practice with written and reading. Will this be a problem, and will this hamper my selection process? I recently applied to join the forces.

Any and every piece of input will be much appreciated, also if you guys have any further tips and suggestions regarding the application and selection process, please let me know. I am hoping to have a career as an officer, so I guess PMA is my destination. Do you get selected for PMA after taking ISSB ?

Also what are the requirements for PMA ?

Regards,

Kharian

Great decision bro............ I will pray for your success. but you must know that it is a hard life. You will have to give up the nationality other than Pakistani but people have done it before. Gen Alvi Shaheed is one case i know of from this forum and there will be many others. If i were of your age, well may be i would have thought about it but its too late for me now........ but irrespective of what the outcome is, it shows that Pakistanis dont lack spirit and such nations are bound to attain greatness one day.

I would suggest you to learn all the Numbers, days, colors in URDU.

Very basic things, but extremely important.
