Even though many want to serve their motherland by joining the armed forces, they are not aware about the Territorial Army (TA) in which even a civilian can work for a minimum two months a year.

Sixty-three years ago, on this day, the then Governor General C. Rajagopalachari formally inaugurated India’s Territorial Army comprising soldier-citizens who pursue their civil career even while contributing towards national defence.

Today, cricketers Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni and actor Mohan Lal have joined TA as honorary Lieutenant Colonels, while Union minister of state for IT Sachin Pilot recently got inducted into TA as a regular officer.

Retired Brigadier Mohan K. Barathan said that those who missed joining armed forces as a full-fledge vocation and chose other professions could serve the country through TA.

He said TA officers are trained for a specific period of time every year and they can act as a buffer for Army during troubled times.

“They don’t come under the category of general reserve, but they are readily available for duty in time of distress.

TA units have done very well in Kashmir during counter insurgency operations. They form a strong disciplined band of men, who can inspire the next generation,” he added.

Territorial Army fought along with the Indian army during the Chinese aggression of 1962, and both the Indo-Pak war of 1965 and 1971.

The battalion has also participated in Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, Operation Rakshak in Punjab and J&K, Operation Rhino and Operation Bajrang in the North East.

Since 1991 Kashmir insurgency, TA has become an exciting job for many. “TA men are posted at second-line in strategic locations in Kashmir and in the North East,” said Lt Gen S. Pattabhiraman.

What exact purpose does the TA hold? Do they fight as front line officers and soldier in case of war or do they perform civil defence duties? Also, what exactly is their military competencies, I see celebrities as Lt. Cols, have they graduated from Officer Training Institutions like IMA Dehradun? Are they Command and Staff College qualified?

Thanks you in advance.

TA is a Military Reserve Force. Same role, similar training.

The celebrities one sees are honorary officers not regular officers of the TA.

The TA is serious business and not to be taken as a civil defence orgnisation which is seperate.

The conceptual framework for the Territorial Army is based on the fundamental idea that it should exist for war-time employment, and should be maintainable at the lowest cost during peace time. The concept encompasses the employment of disciplined, dedicated and a low cost force of gainfully employed citizens from all walks of life to supplement and augment the resources of Regular Army. These citizens on joining undergo a short period of rigorous training, which makes them reasonably competent soldiers. Subsequently, they join units from 14 days to a maximum of 60 days every year for refresher training and to keep in touch with the art of soldiering.

They are recruited, trained and organized like those of the professionals to form a pool of reserves at a very minimum cost. This pool can be mobilized during any form of national emergency to augment the strength of regular forces. Although, Territorials serve for a very limited duration to train themselves as soldiers, most of them attain good professional standards over a period of training and service.

The military competencies are at par with regular units . Besides there also are Ecological TA units who are doing a splendid job in environmental protection.

All forms of essential services have TA units - Railways, Medical etc.

The core officers are from the regular army and are DSSC qualified.

The Auxiliary Air Force was composed of squadrons located at major towns of the country. Apart from a small number of a regular Air Force officers and airmen, to be employed on instructional duties, these squadrons were manned entirely by civilian personnel. Drawn from amongst the permanent residents of the city or locality, the members of these squadrons continued to follow their normal professions.

Seven Auxiliary Air Force Squadrons were raised during the early fifties namely:-

No. 51 Squadron, Safdarjang, New Delhi
No. 52 Squadron, Juhu, Bombay
No. 53 Squadron, Meenambakam, Madras
No. 54 Squadron, Manauri, Allahabad
No. 55 Squadron, Barrack pore, Calcutta
No. 56 Squadron, Bhubaneshwar
No. 57 Squadron, Chandigarh

These squadrons were equipped with the HAL-designed HT-2 trainer - officially introduced into service on 10 January 1955 - and the Harvard, although Vampire FB Mk. 52s were added in 1959.

P.S. For the record, all of the above is from the net

TA isn't regular reserve. These are CRISIS reserves. They do the the duties of para-milletry forces in time of crisis. And peace time they are doing their jobs. It isn't full time army. Command chain is there in TA like IA. Most of ranks of TA are retired IA people. Don't have info on TRAING.

Isn't this something like conscription?

TA-Well trained and easy and costeffective to maintain
