The US still has a lead in technology and it’s bloc still constitutes the bulk of the global economy. Unless China builds up the developing world economies and allies them to China, the US still has the means to rebound from where it’s at to where it need to be to deal with the challenge of China. This is not nationalistic jingoism, but hard reality I’m sure the CCP has thought about and decided (in 2015) to go for the BRI and the 2025 plan (to catch up in key technologies by 2025).

But as recent events have shown, a Russian route may no longer be feasible, and unless China wants to deal with Russia and go through Central Asia, it will have to use an alternative route through Pakistan-Iran-Turkey to reach Europe by land, as well as create a route to deal with the malacca dilemma.

How much is China willing to spend on these alternative routes and/or on its navy to reach African and European resources and markets. China needs a plan for growth in the developing world if it hopes to outcompete the US. The financial risk is mostly dealing with the political elites in these countries. How does China plan to keep everything on track under the new circumstances?
