The chief of Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force has called for stronger cooperation with Vietnam's navy, keeping in mind China's maritime presence.

The MSDF held a workshop on removing unexploded underwater mines aboard the minesweeper tender Bungo on Friday. The vessel is making a port call in Da Nang, central Vietnam.

About 30 divers and Vietnamese navy personnel took part in the workshop.

MSDF Chief of Staff, Admiral Hiroshi Yamamura, said Vietnam is one of the most important Southeast Asian countries to Japan. He said he hopes to strengthen the two nations' ties.

Members of an MSDF special unit talked about their experience in disposing of unexploded mines and bombs off the coast of Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan, during World War Two.

They also spoke about necessary equipment and training for the task.

Yamamura's visit to Vietnam is the first by an MSDF chief in six years. On Wednesday he met a senior official of the country's defense ministry.

Vietnam has territorial disputes with China in the South China Sea. By strengthening ties with the Vietnamese navy, Japan apparently aims to keep China in check amid its growing maritime presence in the region.

@Suika

a military strong Vietnam is good for our region, in the meanwhile you should send more warships into the SC sea for partying

Lol.. JMSDF will watch good show from far but they will ask VN to go bang your head first. Vietnam end up as cannon fodder only. :enjoy:
You know us too little. There will be no good show, nor bad show, we Viet people are stubborn people we fight until the bitter end.

Remember of the Mongol empire! we ignored their ultimatum to surrendering. If they wanted bloodshed they received it. Pls no complain.

Lol.. How selective you are? Didn't the French conquer you and only with support of Chinese did you retain your freedom. Vietnam is not as strong as you claim.

We lost the first war against the French because we failed to keep up with western armies. That is a lesson we learned. You are right, Viet army needs more modernization, more from the West. I think having some squadrons of F35 will not be too bad.

Despite of your claim of peaceful rise, We never know when you run amok.

The two minesweeper ships that visited Vietnam were minesweeper mother ship JS Bungo and minesweeper JS Takashima that set out on a 3 month long mission from September 15th to the India Ocean region which includes stops and joint-training at Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, the Maldives, the Philippines, and Vietnam. They made their stop at the Philippines around September 20th.

They ended up going to Bahrain for international training in October as part of their 3 month long mission.

It is nice that they are able to make a final stop at Da Nang and still include some joint-training with the Vietnamese after a long mission.

Not only military with the naval base, Danang has the most interesting developing story. I hope the city can rival Singapore one day. Why stop in SG? DN has a much better potential!

CCCP helped Vietnam. China did nothing. China had shooken hands with France in Geneva in 1954 to devide Vietnam 1954 and with American 1968/72/74 in Vietnam war.

China is best friend of France and American in the past.
